I got a bunny for my birthday about a year ago (her name is Pepper) and she lived in a play pen indoors. She was always tugging and biting on her play pen like if she was desperate to get out. About a month ago, I figured it would be a good idea to give her to my best friend who has an outdoor bunny so Pepper could feel more free, be able to run, and have another bunny friend. Pepper has bonded with another bunny before, and it was an overall good experience. My friend’s bunny used to live with 2 other bunnies and they were calm and happy together. But unfortunately, the two of them died, so my friend was left with one (Nemo). After giving Pepper a little time to get used to her new home, separated from Nemo, we decided to introduce her to Nemo. As soon as Nemo spotted Pepper, she jumped on her and repeatedly knocked her over and beat her up. It was very hard to watch. We separated them immediately  Me and my friend kept hoping that they would get along, so every once in a while, she tries to introduce them again. But Nemo keeps beating up Pepper and they have to keep being separated. If worst comes to worst i could take Pepper back to my house, but I think she’ll be happier with a bigger yard, and she really seems interested in being Nemo’s friend, but Nemo clearly doesn’t like her. Any suggestions on what i should do? Should we keep trying and risk Pepper getting hurt, but maybe be overall happier and make a lifelong friend, or should i take her back? Please help I want my little bunny to be happy:(

          Hi Alex,

A bit more info will help us understand the situation a bit better. Are all of the rabbits spayed/ neutered? And have you been working on the bonding process with them in neutral territory? If you check in the bonding section there is a template that you can fill out and paste in your reply. It is super helpful for us in giving you advice!

I will also say that bunnies definitely need run-around time outside their pen, so it’s understandable that she was wanting to get out. I’m sure if you bunny-proofed your room and gave her more exercise she could be very happy with you. It’s recommended for buns to have at least 4 hours of exercise out of their pens daily. There are lots of bunny-proofing tips on this site (if you check out the bunny info tab) that might be helpful.

I’m also concerned about the death of two other rabbits recently. What region do you live in? RHDV and Myxomatosis can kill outdoor rabbits, and RHD is currently spreading through parts of North America, so we strongly recommend people keep their rabbits indoors.
