Hello. Just wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions . I have a 12 year old rabbit (coco) who has arthritis. He has been on metacam for about a year and a half 0.2 Recently he has needed more and we are now using the maximum of 0.7 for his weight once or twice a day.
Last weekend he started crunching his teeth. He was given his meds. Seemed to have little or no effect. I took him to the vet the next morning where he was given pain relief by injection. The vet said he had spurs beginning on his teeth and she wondered if this was also causing pain. He had also stopped eating so was given a gut stimulant.
She asked to see him the next day . Still not eating on his own (syringe feeding) she said he had lost weight (previously weighed 6 weeks before) He received more pain relief by injection. She suggested removing the spurs and thought it was possible there might be some she couldn’t see.
In the next day he didn’t settle or eat and I decided to go ahead with the dental treatment which he had yesterday.
Again back today for a check. But he hadn’t had metacam and when I returned from work my son said he was very stiff. I heard a few teeth crunches. I gave him metacam and took him to the vet. I asked for an injection. She said she didn’t want to give too much as it might make him sleepy but gave him a minimum dose.
Tonight he is (ok) eating a little, though not a lot. I’ve heard the odd tooth crunch but not constant.
I asked for stronger pain relief in case he needed it over the weekend and she said they were going to get advice about possible meds. Some people use gabapentin . But again just said if he isn’t ok in the morning he could go in again for a check. They are only open in the morning.
Im worried he will look ok then later tomorrow will be in pain again.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance
