I read that black poop means too much protein but she hadn’t had any protein at all. She just eats Timothy hay. I don’t feed pellets. She runs and hops, spayed, and overall active and happy. Why is this happening? It’s been days since her poop has been black. I thought it might’ve been the hay I buy online, so I went to a pet store to buy hay, still Timothy. Her poop is still black and rather small. Any advice please? 😔

Small dark poop doesnt really mean too much protein. It is more indicative of too little fiber in the diet. Darker poop can also mean more moisture in the diet, as a rule from an increased intake of fresh greens.

Size is more worrying than color. If she is on a hay only diet, I understand that it is hard to gauge how much hay she eats every day,, but if poop gets smaller, I would suspect that she’s been eating less than she normally does.

This is something to keep a close eye on, because if a rabbit stops eating  it becomes a veterinary emergency very soon.

Has anything changed in her environment lately? How old is she? Is she molting?
