When we first came to Alaska our neighbor had a HUGE Rott (named, appropriately enough, Tank) who was the biggest, most lovable teddy bear you could imagine. I had been sitting on this lady’s porch with her, gassbagging, and she went indoors to get us something to drink. Tank had been relegated to the outside of the screened porch and was asking to come back in. Since no one was answering him he vaulted through the screen right above my head (while I bent over to pick something up off the ground at the same time) and this scared the heck out of my friend, who came running out to see if the dog had actually bowled me over. We laughed about it afterwards.
She had five kids at the time and many friends would come over and bring their kids as well…it was a full house everyday it seemed. This dog was terribly protective of them and never hurt any of them, but one of the adults who was over visiting a few weeks after that must’ve set off his radar and he bit this person. So for fear that he might then continue biting, and maybe one of the kids, she had him put down. It was the saddest thing and I cried over him for quite a while because I’d thought he was a lovely creature.
Lots of dogs have problems like this. Whether due to (in)breeding or abuse…it’s not their fault of course, but they are the ones who pay the ultimate price.
