Cataracts can also be from EC! But also from age, as you said. It can be very difficult to tease thing apart but I would mention it to your vet again. The treatment for EC is generally very well tolerated.

I agree with bam! Meloxicam is great but it’s basically the equivalent of ibuprofen. It can only go so far in cases of acute and severe pain. And yes if he is showing any signs of improvement I would stick with the current course.

Molting can def be a trigger. It seems like many buns will go into stasis in spring time, even if they aren’t molting…[Read more]

One thing you can do for training treats is to use the bun’s normal daily pellet ration as treats. Then you can have something like a tiny piece of fruit as a “high value” treat. I’ve seen some trainers cut a dried cranberry into 1/8ths. One thing I’ve learned from dog training is if the treat smells really good it doesn’t have to be large!

    Hello

I have a 10 year old neutered bunny that we have had since he was a baby.  He recently decided to discontinue drinking.   We have taken him to different vets, have had blood work, fecal flotation and urine analysis.  His poo is smaller darker and harder than it should be however he is still urinating and there was no crystals in his uri…[Read more]

I havent tried this particular brand, but I did have a different brand of all timothy pellets. I’m sure they were very healthy, but unfortunately, my buns didnt consider them treats.

So I used them as maintenance food together with hay, and used normal pellets as treats. It is always difficult to find a treat that’s both yummy and not…[Read more]

Henry (1.5 years) is very food motivated but unfortunately puts on weight really quickly because he’s so small. I’m working on bonding with him and getting him to play, but it’s almost impossible without food 😅. He even only lets people pet him while he’s eating.
His treats are mostly little pieces of fruit but I found these timothy hay pellets…

    Fingers crossed he’ll keep improving!

I agree it’d just be stressful for him to take him in for more testing/x-rays if the meds do their work within reasonable time. Once he’s eating a bit and there’s pee and poop, recovery can -and often is- be slow and nerve-wrecking, but as long as you see progress it seems he’s recieving the proper…[Read more]

Thank you! I had thought of EC when he first fell ill, but the my vet didn’t think it so with the symptoms he presented. His ear infection (staph was identified) was severe and the lean was to the affected ear side, so it made sense. I know there can be secondary infection of EC on top of it but he doesn’t seem to show many signs of that.  He…[Read more]

Thanks so much for the helpful replies both!

Its seems things are improving, after the second dose of cisapride that was prescribed Monday by the exotics, Glenn appears to be much much less pain and is beginning to nibble and has passed dropping a couple more times. So this is a relief.

    I am considering…

My buns appreciate Oxbow Essentials, but then they are dedicated om-nom-nomnivores, so they never turn their little noses up at anything edible 😂

As Dana says, the vast majority of buns tolerate good quality pellets excellently, if theyre introduced somewhat slowly. It’s not until if you encounter a problem that you need to try and pinpoint where…[Read more]

FWIW, my buns like both the regular Oxbow essentials and the Garden Select, but the Garden Select gave Bun Jovi really soft sticky cecals. He’s disabled and senior though, so he’s a bit more sensitive. I currently feed Sherwood’s timothy pellet that you feed in the smaller portions, but I’m going to try their free-choice for Bun Jovi to see if it…[Read more]

Stasis recovery can be slow, as Dana says. Did they run any bloodtests? I too think x-rays could be good. Liver values tend to get elevated by stasis alone, but sometimes there is an underlying acute liver problem.

0.8 of 1.5 mg/ml loxicom isnt a huge lot unless Glenn is very tiny. Vets often underdose meloxicam (substance name of Loxicom,…[Read more]
