bumpybunny started the topic rabbit not as interested in pellets anymore? in the forum DIET & CARE 2 years, 9 months ago
for the past week or so, my rabbit hasn’t seemed interested in pellets during her supper time. in the morning she eats all of them at once, and when i give a few to her throughout the day as a treat she always runs and takes it. but in the evening when it’s time for her supper i sprinkle her pellets around and she eats maybe 1/3 of them and lea…[Read more]

I am so sorry for what you have been through and for the loss of your bunny. 🙁 That all must have been incredibly stressful for both you and your bunny.
I must be so difficult not having a trustworthy vet. I’m not sure if it will be of any comfort, but oddly enough dental abscesses CAN pop up seemingly overnight, and they are notoriously…[Read more]

Has anyone experienced problems with the vet(s)? I have placed my absolute trust in them, just because they have successfully performed a dental procedure and because they are the most expensive hospital in my country. Yet it costs us my dearest girl life because of their ignorance and incompetence. Is it my fault that I trusted them so much? Do… -

I’m so sorry for your loss. 🙁 This is very tragic and honestly is very unusual (usually if a bun goes off their hay there are other symptoms as well). I agree it can be really hard to track things when you have more than 1 rabbit. The suggestion to weight your other buns regularly is a good one, I usually give mine a good feel as often as I…[Read more]

Dust in the form of silicaceous particles can cause silicosis. Other types of dust like coal can cause similar diseases (pneumoconiosis), but that’s practically all due to long term expose.
But it’s quite possible that dust can irritate the nasal mucosa mechanically. It should go away after some time after stopping the the exposure though.…[Read more]

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering about the effect of dust rather than any actual bacteria. Not sure if inhaling dust could cause ongoing issues.
They both lost part of their nose a few years back due to Myxomatosis so may be more prone to nasal issues.

Guilt is a part of grief when it comes to pets, I’ve found. It doesn’t equal culpability. It seems rather more a reflection of the thorough responsibility some -I hope most- of us feel.
We are the caretakers of our buns. The buns we lose take a small part of our hearts with them. We learn from each loss, but we must take great care not to learn…[Read more]

Earth and soil contains a whole host of bacteria and fungi, f ex aspergillus. But rabbits are “designed” to dig -and I bet your buns had a great time digging! These bacteria and fungi are normally not harmful for people and animals with a good immune defense, but it’s always “dose-dependant”. (This is why aspergillus mold in hay can cause i…[Read more]

Quick update. Pasteurella swab was negative. I’m due to start a new course of antibiotics today.
I’m now wondering whether digging around in a dusty area could have caused their issue. They dug extensively in some stones in the back garden and I noticed after how dusty the area was. That was probably a week before I noticed symptoms.

I really appreciate your response. Your words were probably the only thing that lessened the guilt a little. I’ve been giving 150% to my remaining two bunnies’ care since her death and I’m realizing there’s not much more I can possibly do above what I was doing for her without quitting my job. If I’m not home for all but 3 of her waking hours, I’m…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Young Rabbit Stopped Growing in the forum DIET & CARE 2 years, 9 months ago
I would keep up with his current diet and start weighing him weekly. Then you’ll have a good series of weights to share with your vet at his Oct check -up. Rabbits can have a bit of a redistribution as they settle into their adult bodies. Lean is not a bad thing for rabbits, but you are correct in that you want to make sure he’s putting on good…[Read more]

Hmmm it’s a bit borderline. My senior got a scaly patch on the back of one ear that I was worried was fur mites, but it never changed in either direction with treating for mites. I think you could probably keep and eye on it. If the scaly area starts growing then I would have the vet take a look and see if it could be fur mites. Ear mites show up…[Read more]
