I think those treats are fine (it’s a reputable brand, Burgess makes great quality rabbit feed), if given in moderation and introduced slowly.

The main problem with high calorie foodfor buns is that the bun might fill up on them and not feel an urge to eat enough hay. Hay is vital for good digestive health, including (the extremely important)…[Read more]

Super good to know thanks Dana,  Pebbles is nearly 4 now and is quite a big rabbit so I know I’m going to have to be more careful with her diet.

Good to know you only feed yours fruit occasionally and don’t see negative effects on the times you do.

I asked Bam a question above about treats before I’d seen you’d replied, if you had any thoughts…[Read more]

Great response from Bam! I agree an apple core a day is too much. Since your bun was having some issues cutting out fruit would be my first step, or reducing it a lot. I very rarely give my buns fruit, and it’s usually something like a single blue berry or a few bites of my apple. 🙂

Sorry Bam, Could I get a bit more advise please?  When we talk about simple sugars they would be in treats as well?  So at the moment I have some Burgess Excel Nature Snacks which include Banana, Blueberry, Apple and Carrot. There will be limited amounts of simple sugars in those?

I agree that it would be good to use the whole vile! Is there a rescue org in your region? They may be able to advertise and even coordinate a vaccine clinic if a vet was able to help administer the vaccine.

Makes total sense. Thanks very much.

I think so, yes. Of course if you notice that some particular food item seems to always cause trouble, regardless of how little you give, it’d be wise to cut it out altogether.

Thanks for the reply Bam 🙂 ,

So perhaps that suggests a small amount a couple of times a week is ok and probably the way to go?

This is the opposite of a stupid question.

GI microbiota is an area of active research, but there’s still so many things that aren’t understood. What can be said though, is that there are a whole host of various gut microbes that interact in many different ways. There are bacteria, yeasts (fungi) and possibly also certain viruses that the rabbit…[Read more]

I know of a couple more bunny owners in town so my plan was to reach out to them if I get the vile. May as well use all of it right? Unfortunately I don’t know them well enough to ask to split the cost though.

I’m not sure exactly how many cases we’ve had/when the last one was. According to a distribution map I found its been “high” in my region…[Read more]

Hi, First post, this may be a stupid question, But can rabbits lose tolerance to fruits if they’re not fed them enough?

After a couple of bouts of gas within a week a couple of weeks back i’ve been taking a serious look at my furry friends diet. She is having way more hay and way less Kale and treats, I’ve also started feeding her one of each of…[Read more]

I have to drive mine two hours to another state for theirs because it’s not available in my state (I live in New England so the states are small haha). I did this with my senior as well and they all did great. I brought a bag of favorite salad greens and made sure they ate some at the vet before driving home. I’ve found most buns don’t like the…[Read more]

Between this and the Reddit post I made that got ~40 replies saying do it I’ve been convinced. I’m getting all 3 bunnies vaccinated. The trick now is actually doing it. My local vets don’t normally carry the vaccine, but one said they’d look into getting a full bottle and I’d pay for all of it. No idea what that’ll cost yet.

    The alternative is…[Read more]

Hi I’m so sorry for your loss

My bunny passed yesterday morning and was also very very skinny. He was 8 years old and I took him to the vet 3 months ago and he weighed 2.5 pounds. About 1 month ago, I took him to the vet again and he weighed only 1.9 pounds, which meant he lost 30% of his body weight. His vet ran labs, did xrays, palpated all his…[Read more]

I was hoping Dana would reply to this, bc I know she has extensive experience with this, both with her own buns and the shelter buns she has worked with.

I am in Europe and we got the RVHD2 vaccine here in the fall of 2016. I vaccinate my buns yearly (our current vaccine is given once per year) even though my buns are house buns. As Dana says,…[Read more]

I would definitely get them vaccinated. Buns can be safely vaccinated as young as 7 weeks (according to the FAQ sheet for the Medgene vaccine, the one currently available in the USA),  and I had my senior bun vaccinated at age 11, 12, and 13 with absolutely no ill effects. I also helped our rescue with a vaccine clinic and over hundreds of…[Read more]

It is good that you had to push away hair to see them. Preferably the hair should cover the bald spots as “best it can”. That is why fat creams and ointments aren’t very good as long as the skin is intact, creams tend to make the surrounding hair tacky and less proctective (my very rabbit savvy vet has told me this, I beleive it to be true).

    If…[Read more]
