Louiethebunny replied to the topic What should I do to keep my bunny happy and healthy ? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 6 years, 2 months ago
Just an FYI, some parks use pesticides or chemicals in the grass, so I would be cautious with a bunny at the park. I would also beware of dogs or other animals in the environment that could be predatory or cause stress to your rabbit. Some people like to buy pop-up puppy playpens because they are quick to set up for giving a bunny outside time.

My rabbit isn’t a huge hay eater, but after I modified his diet and offered several types of ways to “find” hay, he’s more interested. I put DIY hay bags around our room for him to forage, some hay free in the litter box, some in a bag above his litter box, and some in kleenex boxes with the plastic removed, he finds it especially fun to pull the…[Read more]

You can. But I would be wary of the ink getting on their paws.

You could try a hay topper to get him interested. Dried willow leaves, oat flowers, dandelion, mint, chamomile, etc.

Some bunnies just don’t handle veggies well. Sometimes it’s certain ones and sometimes it’s all veggies. I’m sure they would be angry with you, but cutting out greens for awhile is not going to hurt them. After being off the veggies for a bit, you can try reintroducing one kind at a time to see if anything causes discomfort. It can be a long…[Read more]

I have a shredder and was wondering if I could use the paper shreds I get from that for litter.

It might help to give him multiple places to go around and be curious/graze at the hay. Rabbits are naturally foragers, so it may pique his interest! I know one of my rabbits is eating a lot more hay because I gave him more places to eat it. You can stuff hay in toilet paper tubes, cardboard boxes, etc..

I have thought about going hay only for a while but I don’t think they will be happy with me for it. They thump at feeding time to get me lol 😂 they have parsley, they had sprouts but I cut that out because I know it can cause issues …they have tons of foraging stuff that I know has dandelions and other stuff in and she loves them ..
My vets…[Read more]

It’s really hard to say! So you just have to be prepared in case it does. Sorry if that isn’t a satisfying answer. :p

The things that jumped out to me were broccoli and cauliflower, which can cause gas, and can lead to stasis. Do they get any other greens? Have you tried going to a hay-only diet for a while to see if that helps?
Then you could slowly add things back in, but I would cut out all members of the Brassica family (all cabbages), especially broccoli,…[Read more]

Thank you for the replies ..I honestly don’t know, I’m aware bunnies tummies and digestions are funny things so I’m quite strict and have altered as I have thought something might be an issue.
I have two buns, they are both on the same diet, have the same treats on the rare occasion treats are had, anything new they may have is given in the…[Read more]

I think teeth was a biggy I didn’t mention, she does have spurs but from current info it’s just the spurs she has always had and no irritation caused by them, checked regularly as my boy bun does have bad teeth so we get paranoid about all things dental

Do you think adding the velvet later on will cause the boys to fight when they aren’t with velvet doing bonding sessions? In their pen/free roam time. (Once we get to that point)

Those seem like more of a treat, so would not be a good replacement for hay. Hay is needed for fiber (which makes up the bulk of the gut and keeps things functioning), wears down the teeth (chewing the strands of hay), and also prevents boredom (buns should spend at least 4 hours a day chewing!).Β But they do sell compressed hay cubes (that are…[Read more]

Poor baby (and poor you!), so stressful. π
I agree with others that more info on her diet would be helpful. Has she had a deep dental exam (w/x-rays) and an abdominal x-ray?
Those would be my next steps. Apologies if you’ve already posted about this elsewhere!
This is probably the most detailed resource on stasis (ileus), that you may have…[Read more]

Glad to see the trio is going well! π
Adding the fourth might upset the trio, but hopefully since they are used to her presence it wouldn’t. But it’s possible.
Some humping sounds normal. Trio dynamics are different than pairs, so Patches prob feels the need to so some dominance over Ziggy. The hierarchy might change again in the quad.

I agree with LBJ, it would be very useful to know what her diet is like. My boy Bombur has gut issues due to EC, if I donβt keep his diet on point. He has a very sensitive stomach, so I have to limit treats to 1-2 times a week and only a small a small amount like a single blueberry or half a strawberry. I also have to carefully monitor his g…[Read more]

Hmm… could it be something she is eating? If this is becoming a pattern, then it might be worth going through a process of elimination to see if anything triggers these episodes.
Is it full-on stasis? Or just gas discomfort? You said she’s usually fine after some gut stimulation, so I’m wondering if it isn’t something disagreeing with her and…[Read more]
