You should not separate them since they are now bonded. It could disrupt the bond, and the marking would probably start again once she was there.

I think it would be most important to consider what will happen to the rabbit once you return to in-person classes (and beyond). I think it’s normal to want to get a rabbit when you are home all the time, but rabbits can live 9-12 years, so thinking about care for the rabbit for it’s entire life is very important.

If you go on trips often a rabbit might not be for you. Rabbits need consistent meals, and lots of out of pen time. They can’t be left alone for long, as their health can go downhill real fast. They are definitely not like cats, who are fine alone for a weekend.

@Ana700Luna I will ask at the rescue about the oldest rabbits we’ve had spayed. I know just recently there was a 6-7 year old. It really is about the vet’s comfort level and experience.

Regarding the reasons to spay, I would say possibly bonding her is secondary to eliminating the cancer risk, so I would go for the spay, bonding or no bonding. I agree about seeing if another vet would spay her. It’s unfortunate they turned her away when she was six, as that’s not too old, my girl was spayed a few months ago and she’s six.

It used to be more common to bond neutered males with unspayed females, back in the day when very few vets would spay. And we do occasionally see situations where it happens still, such as a case where the female can’t be spayed for health reasons.
