Thank you DanaNM. Yeah I’m pretty sure the pellets at the rescue were alfalfa based. It’s possible that it could be the issue. I can try that today and see what happens.

She is taking metacam twice a day (today is the last day per the vet’s instructions). It has been a hassle to give it to her, she hates it.

I’ll refresh her hay today and continue to giver her veggies and pellets. The way she’s moving and acting makes me thing she’s no longer sore, but I may be wrong.

Try the alfalfa! Not trying to use Pinky as a guinea pig, but I’m very interested to hear if it works.

I think I also remember that his pellets at the rescue had alfalfa in them? So maybe the shift away from that was what triggered the yucky poops?

At this point, keeping her eating is the most important (and very good she’s pooping and peeing), so offering her extra veg and pellets is good for now. You could also offer some critical care on a spoon or a plate (some bunnies love it).

Refreshing the hay pile often seems to help some buns eat more hay (vs. having just one big pile or a rack…[Read more]

Thanks for the advice, sorry I’m just now responding (I thought I already had).

Pascal has an appointment tomorrow morning for an exam and a sanitary shave. Hoping all goes well!

She’s probably still sore. Did they give you pain meds for her? You could also try adding cilantro or basil to the hay. It worked for Starlight. 🙂 good luck!

    Hi all,

My bunny got spayed on Saturday morning, and I brought her home Sunday afternoon. She’s pretty much back to acting like herself other than being mad at me because I still keep her confined in a small space so that she doesn’t damage her stitches. I’ve been giving her some of her favorite veggies, and more pellets than usual, but I have…[Read more]

Wow, even Oxbow’s botanical hay? That stuff is pretty fragrant. Dana suggested hay toppers… herbs, willow leaves, clover, alfalfa, etc. Would something like that be more enticing?

Results came back, no parasites. But I don’t really know what to do from here. :/ Still having the moist poops and staining the blankets. And still different shapes and odd shapes. ):

Yeah, that’s an awful lot of alfalfa. As Dana said, you can give it to adult rabbits as a treat. It should not make up the bulk of the hay they are eating.

Oh I understand! Thanks for clarifying. How long has it been since his trim? Sometimes they can be a bit sore afterward. How many pellets and greens does he get per day? Could he be filling up on pellets?

Fresh grass is very healthy for the gut, but not quite a perfect substitute as it doesn’t grind the teeth the same way.

    Aside from trying…[Read more]

Adult buns shouldn’t have any alfalfa on a regular basis (although a tiny amount as a treat is OK), their hay should be all grass hays (timothy, orchard, oat, rye, bermuda are all good). So yes, 40% alfalfa would be too much.

My family cat Palina has passed at the age of 17. It hurts so bad. She was originally my brother’s cat but my father, sister and i all took her in after he passed away in April. I’ll miss hearing her loud meows when she wanted attention 🙁 poor thing. She went down hill so fast. Yesterday she was happily purring and meowing and then all of a…[Read more]
