Frenchvanillacoffee started the topic Afraid my bunny, Cookie, is unwell. in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 8 months ago
Hello. I posted to this forum in 2019 when Cookie went in for surgery for an abscess. Before I could update the thread, the forum closed for maintenance. Luckily, Cookie recovered nicely from her surgery. However, my other bunny, Honeybun, passed away from sudden GI stasis a couple of months afterward. I took her to the vet three days in a row,…[Read more]

Hi, all! Just joined since I have unexpectedly become the caretaker of a sweet little bun. While I will explain in lots of detail below, I want to start by saying that Bunson is already under the care of an awesome rabbit-savvy vet for his issues. I am simply looking for as much information as possible since I am very new to this. I’m sorry in…[Read more]

I think something metal in structure, and then to make it more graze-worthy and not have huge holes that the hay just falls out, maybe get a thicker gauge chicken wire mesh or something to attach around/inside the structure.

I also know of a rescue bun that successfully recovered from this, it’s great you caught it early!

I’m so sorry to hear about this, but yes, it is great that it was caught early! A rabbit at a rescue I volunteer for recovered well after her liver lob torsion surgery. Also, these things can happen pretty spontaneously, so if at all you are blaming yourself, do not. The best you can do now is take care of yourself so you can be present for post-op care.

I just got home from the vet. Sadly she needed to stay overnight. Her belly was empty and she was a little dehydrated but there were no blockages or obvious signs of injury so they ran labs and did an ultrasound asking other things. They found she has liver lobe torsion. Apparently not uncommon in Holland Lops. She’ll need surgery tomorrow.
They…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Best option when going out of town? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 8 months ago
I would say it depends on what your sister’s house is like. Do you trust that it is safe and bunny-proofed? Are there other pets in the house? Is it very loud and possibly scary? Do you know how well your bun adapts to changes?
I have done both options with my buns. I usually opt to take them to a sitter’s house if the trip will be longer than 2…[Read more]

Just remember that as long as he’s eating, pooping, and not showing signs of pain, then no need to panic yet!
The bun that I cared for had horrible cycles of gas and stasis, followed by big splats of unformed poops (cecal dysbiosis). The little guy was in a lot of pain and it was so sad. Pinky seems like he is doing great other than this, so it…[Read more]

Any updates? Where you able to take her in? I wonder if something was brewing before the nail trim?
Was there any more struggling than normal during the trim? Could she have potentially been injured?

Cats and rabbits are often fine together. Just supervise them at first and be ready with the squirt bottle if the cat gets too rambunctious. I wouldn’t say my cat and bunnies are friends, but my cat often lounges around them and it’s no issue. They will run him off if he gets too close to their condos though. I also keep my cat’s claws trimmed…[Read more]

I found this thing at a Ross that is mean to be a toilet paper roll holder that’s made of metal (like the kind that would sit on the ground to hold spare rolls), and it’s kind of a perfect hay rack.
It looks kind of like this one but without the tall part:
I also used a paper back with a hole cut out of the bottom temporarily, and they…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Rabbits fighting for dominance…I think in the forum BEHAVIOR 5 years, 8 months ago
Agree with Wick, at this point they definitely need to be separated until she is spayed, because her hormones will get in the way of the bond forming properly. This is especially true in the pubescent years when hormones are just fluctuating all over the place. Also the more they fight now the harder it will be to bond them, so best to just stop…[Read more]

It is actually common for vets to wait until females are a certain age to spay. This is because they need to ensure the rabbit is sexually fully developed internally to completely remove the ovaries and uterus.
At this point, separation is needed since, and I think deciding in that arrangement may bring a lot less stress, be more manageable, and…[Read more]

Thanks for the response! It would probably be more neutral, but Mischa has a tendency to get behind the tub. I worry about them getting into a scuffle in a place where I can’t easily stop it. It’s also quite narrow, so sitting on the floor with them would be a bit cramped. I guess going back to the kitchen would be the best bet, I may take your…[Read more]

Hi, I wanted to ask if anyone has the experiences with cats and rabbits under the same roof. My french lop rabbit is neutered and has almost 2 years. In February I am moving to a new house and in the middle of March I am buying a Russian blue cat. The cat will be 17 weeks old and neutered as well.
My questions is basically if you have any advice…[Read more]

Moonlightbunny66 started the topic Best hay rack? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 8 months ago
The bunnies have been wasting SO much hay. When I clean the litter box there’s always a thick layer of pee hay on top of the wood pellets. I use shower caddies as hay racks, but the bunnies go for one piece in particular and end up with a pile on their head… It’s funny but not ideal!
I’ve been looking at ideas online. I like the wooden box o…[Read more]

Thank you DanaNM! I think I’m going to write an email to my vet and see if they think Pinky should go in again (maybe more tests?). Or see if they have any new suggestions. It gives me anxiety to think about all of this! I just want my bunnies to be healthy and happy. 🙁
