I’d say it depends on if the bun is a fabric chewer, and what type of flooring you have. If the bun chews fabric, then you’ll have to remove it, so you should have a back-up plan so he’s not walking on the grids.
Also if you want to protect your floor, having something more solid is a good idea. If your floor is tile or vinyl, you could just have…[Read more]

I see it as an animal right. I respect my rabbit’s rights. But I do if I have to live. And i also do not trust veterinarians.

Hello everyone!
I have found a bunny I am adopting and hoping to bring home from the rescue next Friday! I need to get the cage in order before he arrives home but I have some questions.
I was going to do what I did prior with my bunny who passed — a C&C grid cage. I wanted to do a fleece liner I’m ordering from a shop that does them for rab…[Read more]

thanks Dana, you are always full of great ideas. It is reassuring to hear the thought that maybe i can just let it dry until i have enough laundry to do. since posting this thread, i’ve found some cheap disposable mopheads (knockoffs for the swiffer) that i think might attach to my microfiber mop. i’m going to give those a try. i think it might…[Read more]

Ok thanks, I’m just super nervous with allowing nipping, just since she is half blind I worry she will freak out since she often times will grunt and box at me if she’s approached from the blind side.

Wick & Fable replied to the topic Possibly a hermaphrodite? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 5 months ago
Just to talk about terminology, for humans, we don’t use hermaphrodite anymore — there’s inaccuracy in doing so and also negative connotation around it. When talking about a human whose external and internal genitals do not match, we say intersex.
For animals, I believe hermaphrodite is still used to capture these situations though.

We did have a hermaphrodite/intersex bunny at the rescue while I was there! It’s a bit more common than most people realize. If memory serves, she had a uterus, one ovary, and 1 testicle, that was found when they went to spay her (the testicle was undescended). Externally she looked to have more of a vulva (hence the assignment of “she”), but…[Read more]

Thanks!
I’ve also bought some readigrass. I’ve read that this can sometimes be too high in calcium for bunnies, but the one I’ve bought is 0.55%, which is think is about the same as Timothy hay. Do you think this would be a good long term alternative? It’s not quite as course as hay but think it will help with keeping the teeth and digestive…[Read more]

Neutering should fix the problem assuming it’s not a UTI. Is there a specific reason why you’re hesitant to neuter?

I’m not sure what the correct term (I hope it’s not offensive) for a rabbit that is both male and female is, but the vet used the term hermaphrodite as well.
I posted about concerns with this a while ago, and thought we resolved it. Starting at the beginning, I was told by the animal shelter that Pinky is a male, and they offered to get him neu…[Read more]

I’m very sorry about Missy 🙁
I think trying a slightly larger space (as long as it’s neutral), and allowing a little nipping is a good idea. Nipping is fine, as long as it’s not escalating to a fight. Having a bit more room will give you some time to react, and will give them a bit more room to move around each other.
The other thing you can…[Read more]

I’m happy to share the literature with you if you would like if you send me a PM. The study where that number comes from (“Spontaneous
Adenocarcinoma in Aged Rabbits”) followed 849 rabbits for 9 years, and another colony of 1375 rabbits for 30 years. Here’s the key quote: “The incidence of tumors increased with age, reaching approximately 60% in…[Read more] -

How big is her area? Would it be very impractical to just wipe it down by hand with paper towels or rags?
For my buns, I sweep the area daily (or every other day if I’m really honest about it lol), spot clean if there are any pee accidents or water spills, and then probably every week or two I wipe down their pen floor with rag or paper towel and…[Read more]

Glad things are going better and hopefully the new hay helps! I just had to get some oxbow timothy hay while we were moving (as opposed to the normal bale of hay I feed) and my buns all turned their noses up at it, although they do love the oxbow stacks so that got us through thankfully. They definitely can have strong opinions about hay!

DanaNM replied to the topic Rabbit smell – HELP! in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 5 months ago
I’m glad things have improved! The treats could have had some extra protein in them that made her urine smellier.
Personally, if the symptoms have gone away, I probably not give the antibiotics unless my vet felt strongly that I should give them. I don’t personally like giving antibiotics unless necessary, even if they are safe ones to use. But…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Callouses? Should I worry? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 5 months ago
Some bunnies do have callouses there, especially if they thump a lot. When they are covered by a flap of fur it’s not as concerning as if the callous is easily visible all the time. So as it is now, I would just keep an eye on it and be sure to keep up with the nail trims. If he sits in his litter box a lot, the urine can also contribute, so…[Read more]

It sounds like hormonal marking to me. Since he’s not neutered, that’s most likely, and he’s at the age when hormones are raging. Ruling out a UTI would be good though.
You can try removing the carpet and see if that helps, sometimes bunnies will mark more on soft surfaces.
