koj started the topic baking soda in paper pellet bedding in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 4 months ago
hello! I decided to try a different bedding for my bun since I don’t think his pee is absorbing well, and I heard paper pellets were the best. I visited my local pet store and found fresh4life eco-paper pellets for cats. the worker said it was fine to use for rabbits; however, I noticed that the company adds in baking soda to neutralize the s…[Read more]

Jeeez Ellie, that’s awful! Consent is key for everything! Hopefully some signage will help… maybe you can add some electric wire if not!

DanaNM replied to the topic Endive vs chicory in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 4 months ago
Yep, frisee/endive/chichory are all good staples.
The main thing to watch out for are veggies that are high oxalate (beet tops, chard, spinach, parsley). Many veggies that are high in calcium are also super nutritious (like carrot tops, which are also very high in vitamin A).
Dr Frances Harcourt-Brown has an article discussing veggies and…[Read more]

Unfortunately it didn’t seem to help him very much, but we think he had a chronic issue due to his genetics. I also had a hard time getting cecals from my healthy rabbit, so I think we only successfully did cecal shakes once, but did poop shakes with regular poops for maybe a week?
That said, my vet would only ever do things that worked for him…[Read more]

You’re welcome! I’m so happy to hear she is on the mend!
Seeing a bun nibbling hay after a stasis episode is just about the best feeling in the world.

Grabbing at your bags and coat? And debit card?! I would just assume someone’s trying to rob me in that situation, geez! How can anyone think that’s appropriate? I’m so sorry you have to put up with people like that. Putting a sign on your wheelchair is a good idea, that should help. And maybe put something sticky/slimey on the handles, they’ll…[Read more]

Yes, it’s really crazy. Some people also try to push you out of the way, like an abandoned grocery cart. What shocked me is that it’s mostly older people who cross the line. I’ve had about 60 incidents in the last 3 years, and only 4 people were under 60.
Some people with a disability already started putting spike bracelets on their wheelchair…[Read more]

Poor guy, but you’re right, it’s a good thing he didn’t have to spend a lot of time in a place he hated before passing.
I can’t believe people push your wheelchair around without your permission, that’s crazy. It’s incredibly rude, but I guess it’s like you said, they think they’re “helping”. But they need to at least ask first, and certainly…[Read more]

Bam replied to the topic My baby bunny is shaking his head in the forum BEHAVIOR 5 years, 4 months ago
Head shaking is a very common symptom of an ear problem. This mostly occurs in lops, and in later years it has become very common in lops (it is a breeding problem, much like really short noses in dwarf rabbits and several smaller dogs).
If your bun is a lop, I’d recommend you make a vet appointment. A vet will look into the external ear canal…[Read more]

What type of rabbit is he? I know that lop eared bunnies are more prone to ear infections.

thank you so much for your advice. It’s always so worrying when they are sick.
My bunnies don’t have pellets and Betty has never had a problem with hay. My vet says it’s because of the time of year, the wild greens I gave her were too rich. She wants me to feed her only hay for a few days then reintroduce fresh food one by one and in much smalle…[Read more]

The House Rabbit Society lists frisee lettuce as a low-oxalic staple green.

Carrot tops are high in calcium. Some buns are sensitive to high calcium in greens, but some tolerate them well. If your bun is healthy, you can feed carrot tops now and then.

He should get a vet check up to file out any medical problems. I will say though that my Wally bops his head around a lot when he’s happy so if you rule out medical problems then it means you have a happy bunny!

The hardest part of loving a pet is saying good-bye. 🙁
I wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear about Joey. She was truly loved and you gave her a lot of happiness. It is so hard to lose a friend so fast, so suddenly and without a good reason — know she is in bunny heaven though!
