Mickey used to be underweight, she’s in a really healthy weight for months now😌 Last time she was at her lowest, she was staying at the vets for days, because she was in a critical condition. So I’m worried if I free fed her, she’d overeat and bloat.
she’s obsessed with food, she’ll try to climb up the table, if she knows there’s food (that’s t…[Read more]

So, my first impression is that I think more pre-bonding would help. And I think you should go back to side-by-side set ups. It will SUCK with the spraying, but that is all kind of part of the process. The idea is that you go with that set-up until they calm down. Usually after a week or so things start to mellow. I think this may be especially…[Read more]

I will just add that there is nothing wrong with re-homing a bun if you make sure that he goes to a good home. And yes I don’t think that anything that happened is a reflection on his character as a rabbit or ability to bond in general, it was just an unfortunate accident. 🙁
It is also a sad reminder to others who may find this thread that it is…[Read more]

That’s so sad. 🙁 It’s true it can be very hard for a sick bunny to properly bond with another bun.
One thing I haven’t tried but that might be worth considering is free-feeding pellets for Mickey. Since megacolon buns tend to have issues keeping weight on due to cecal dysfunction, it might help.
If things are stable the way they are, it may not…[Read more]

I think Wick is probably right then about it being diet-related. Excess protein in the diet (usually due to soy or alfalfa in pellets) can cause stinkier pee as well.
New bunnies can also be stinkier “intentionally” for territorial reasons! Those onion poops tend to be territorial poops, and they can also expose their scent glands which can make…[Read more]

Apologies for the delayed response everyone, but I wanted to thank you emensely for the feedback. It’s been a stressful couple of days for myself and my mom especially because we both love Willow so much, and to see him hurt in such a brutal way was jarring – traumatizing, to be frank. I’m feeling more alone than ever because I am the only one who…[Read more]

Thank you for the reply!
I’ve read most of the articles about megacolon rabbits, they rarely tell what to do in those situations, because the treatment is different for every rabbit. But I’ll definitely read this one!
The thing is, Mickey is the new rabbit. The other one is so sweet and loving, and is a year older than Mickey. When I bonded…[Read more]

I’m sorry you are going through such a hard time with her 🙁
Have you read this info?https://www.vgr1.com/megacolon/
There are some tips there that may be worth trying.
I’m curious about the increase in aggression. Did that happen when you brought the second bunny home? Or maybe it’s tied to always having to give her meds?

Oh gosh, I’m sorry this happened. I would explain exactly what you did here, and hopefully get a different technician if possible.

I tend to like to give buns more space to sort things out, so I would prob try letting them out in the morning and see how it goes. If it gets worse then you can go back to penning them. 🙂

I’ve used the Benebac gel. I think there’s just one type of it, I think I used the dog and cat version? My memory is that the gel seems to be more popular than the powder.

That is unusual! I haven’t had something like that happen with my buns, but I think a vet visit is a good idea. I have had buns change their chewing preferences when they are uncomfortable, so it could be something like her teeth making her restless.

Hello, bunny parents
I took Smushy to the vet for a dental procedure yesterday. He had a pre-surgical exam, and there were no injuries noted or observed. He was under the vets care for roughly 11 hours.
When the technician brought him out to me, post-surgery, she tilted the cage upwards and Smushy slid to the other side, I both saw and heard…[Read more]

I’m sorry, since I was afraid to lose the thread again, I couldn’t reread my answers – so the pellets I give them are burgess nuggets with mint.
I also give them leafy green mix, and/or dandelion leaves.
Also homegrown basil, dill, parsley and two different mints as a snack.

Maintenance and Housing
Is your bunny housed indoors or outdoors? She’s an indoor rabbit.
Does your bunny live with other bunnies?
If yes, are they bonded? She does not, I can’t let my other rabbit near her because Mickey ( the one I’m posting about) is aggressive towards everyone, but they used to be bonded and all cute together.
How much e…[Read more]

She was spayed as a youngster. One other thing I forgot to mention … she has these “logs” made of compressed hay that she loves to chew on. I’ve noticed around the time this behavior started, she hasn’t been chewing on them, which is another reason I’m wondering if it’s a dental issue. Hopefully the vet can get us in soon (waiting for a call b…[Read more]
