I’m sorry about the Syphilis, I hope he got over it okay. Sounds like you’re correct and the breeder just isn’t trustworthy. It’s easy to end up accidentally doing business with an unethical breeder even though you did your research. Don’t feel bad though, at least now you have two adorable buns that you got out of a bad situation. 🙂

I love your language around “curbing” chewing, rather than trying to eliminate it or reduce it– I like to view it as rabbits have 100% chew energy and we cannot decrease that 100%; only redirect it. Spaying/Neutering is likely the only thing that might decrease the overall “capacity”, but ultimately it’s still 100% and it needs to go towards…[Read more]

I agree with Wick that some more advanced imaging might be informative. I also wouldn’t rule out the possibility that his teeth were to blame, some bunnies are really sensitive to even tiny molar spurs. Although with regular critical care it is concerning that he’s still been losing weight.

If you have it available, you might also offer fresh…[Read more]

It’s very encouraging that you are starting to see grooming from both sides and relaxing near each other! It really sounds like they are getting there, and are just working out some final details of their relationship. Fighting in the beginning of sessions is more encouraging than at the end, because it usually indicates they are just getting a…[Read more]

Spaying should help some with this behavior, but it might not eliminate it completely. You might also notice it gets worse before it gets better after spaying, as some buns go through a “post spay craze” while their hormones settle.

For chewing and digging, you’ll have to experiment with a combo of blocking access to problem spots, and providing…[Read more]

I just adopted a 4 month old Netherland Dwarf female and she’s the cutest thing! However, I noticed she often bites on the metal bars of her cage and her x-pen, even though she gets plenty of exercise and chew toys. Sometimes she even tries to ‘dig’ through the corner of her cage. While this isn’t the worst thing and she stops eventually if I…[Read more]

Mixed signals are definitely a natural part of bonding. It sounds like you’re keeping in mind judging when may or may not be appropriate to intervene, which is good. With bonding, I find it most helpful to look at the big picture (i.e. across days) rather than individual behaviors. Just like with two human children figuring out their relationship,…[Read more]

It’s great that you are seeing an exotics vet — rabbit-friendly vets can be good at times, but especially for these complex issues, it is good to have a trained eye looking at things and supporting you through this. I am interested in what the most recent blood tests may say regarding organ function. Also, were any fecal tests conducted? It may…[Read more]

I’m sure it is unpleasant to gain insight on what caused an end, but I hope that having some more clear answers can help you during this time. I also hope that you are holding onto at least some forgiveness for yourself because you did everything a great owner should have done.

    Thank you.

I talked to the vet again, he said at the end there was liver torsion and toxic shock? I am not sure exact terminology but those 2 things caused the crash at the end. The conclusion was that he got a small obstruction that triggered things, but even getting to the vet that morning all the gas buildup, cecal dysbiosis issue was already…[Read more]

I appreciate kind words. I am still in shock but want to do a rainbow bridge post in his memory soon.

The ER vet is going to do a Necropsy so I hope they can find something. Either a blockage that caused bloat or some underlying issue that triggered stasis. It seemed so severe. Regardless, I am going to try not to “what if” too much on what could…[Read more]

Our bunny Keiji had been slowly eating less and less over the past few weeks and has lost a lot of weight. He is now at the point where there is very little left to lose and we are getting desperate – I’m hoping somebody on here has had a similar experience or could give any advice. We have been in and out of our vets over the past few weeks and…[Read more]

I’m not in the USA, but I have always had insurance for my buns and no company offers any plan that covers rabbit teeth. It has still been a great help though. The vet must specify what procedures they do and why, and there’s a qualifying period of 30 days for illnesses (not for accidents), so you should look into those terms too before deciding.
