Interesting! I will ask him about this when we talk again on Monday. Sounds like Pen G injections may be the way to go since it covers  either of the possibilities. I agree with your thought that  the Baytril might only be controlling and not strong enough.

He did briefly talk about Pen G as the traditional treatment for syphilis. He said the e…[Read more]

Did you do any pre-bonding with them?  How long have you had each bunny?

If they were separated overnight then it wasn’t truly 24 hrs straight. It might actually be better to put them back in their home enclosures overnight, so they don’t try to claim the neutral space while they are separated (it will also give them a break… bonding is…[Read more]

Bunnies dig in the dirt all the time so I really doubt that was the issue.

I would tell the vet his breathing seems labored, just as you told us here. There are multiple things that can cause this, so it’s really up to the vet to diagnose, but one possibility is a respirator infection. If you don’t want to just try a general antibiotic you can…[Read more]

Beautiful Teddy! Meg, he was so very lucky to have you. Your bond with him was very special and one you will cherish forever.

If it is pasteurella, has the vet considered that maybe the Baytril isn’t effective enough. Maybe it just keeps it a bay, but then the bacteria builds back up once the Baytril isn’t in her system anymore. The typical treatment for syphilis is pen G shots. Pen G can also be used for chronic pasteurella infections. Just some thoughts.

I’ve got some clarity on all the confusion. It was as I had figured that her vet mistakenly thought he called and left me a lengthy message, but left it on somebody else’s phone instead.
He decided to do research on her symptoms after our office visit on Thursday. Then he called an exotic specialist that he says he has very high regards for to con…[Read more]

Thanks for your response. He is having an appointment for nail trimming and a check-up this Wednesday. What should I tell the doctor? I’m sure he will suggest to put my bun on antiobiotics like penicillin or baytril (which he already did by the way). If he does suggest this, should I proceed with the antiobiotics treatment or is there better w…[Read more]

    Hello,
I am keeping a good watch on his eye. Rest assured he will see a vet if there is no improvement by tomorrow. It’s only been a few hrs for his eye at this point and as I said, no visible injury so I’m taking a wait and see approach first.

as for the bond, yesterday was day 1, I had them without a litter and just some hay and pee pads, and…[Read more]

    Hi there,

I’m assuming you are you doing 24/7 bonding? Either way, you need to give them more time. As you said, you are only on day 2. Do be extra sure that his eye is OK. If he’s still squinting I would pause bonding and have him seen by a vet.

I do have a couple tips to consider and try though! When they approach each other and put their…[Read more]

These are great suggestions from Dana!  Regarding the friction, that made me want to add that for a while when Teddy had a sore hock issue we got these super soft blankets and put them down over his rugs, tucking the edges of the blanket under the rugs to keep them in place.  They are sure to pass the inner-wrist test.  I won’t paste another li…[Read more]

Hello, I have a 5 yr old female Holland lop and a 8yr old Netherland dwarf male, both fixed for years. The dwarf is new to me and I am trying to bond them. The male is doing everything as expected, lowering head, grooming her, mounting her. But she just runs away and refuses to groom him or mount him. She will put her head down for grooming but…[Read more]

    Yep, Bam covered it all!

Most bonds will work out with time and patience, but the first step is getting everyone spayed and neutered and keep them separated until then.

Extremely labored breathing with lung sounds is a very serious symptom. I would get a second opinion if your vet didn’t seem confident in treating. Respiratory infections can be very stubborn and often require a culture to identify the bacteria.

I’m sorry you are dealing with this 🙁

If you haven’t found them already, there is a Disabled Rabbits group on Facebook that may be able to give you some suggestions, there are lots of people there with EC buns.

I’m wondering if she should be confined to a smaller area while she heals, even though I know that will be hard with a younger…[Read more]

Redness is OK and normal with healing (the body is sending more blood to that area to help repair).

As for her appetite, it sounds like a bit of gas. I think simethicone  was a good move, and you could give her some pain meds if you any left. Encouraging gentle movement can also help. One of my buns used to get gassy from arugula, even though…[Read more]

I’m so sorry to hear that!  If they’re open to it, it would be great if they could bring the other bunny (the brother) inside where he can get good care.  Although there was unfortunately a tradition of thinking of bunnies as “farm animals” that can live in a barn or hutch, they actually need a lot more care, love, attention, and protection than t…[Read more]
