  Within the last few months one of my rabbits has developed chronic GI issues. After a few episodes of stasis, he had an obstruction that had to be surgically removed. He’s great now and takes motility meds every few days to keep him regular, but my question is about his hay. Both my rabbits eat orchard grass. I’d tried to feed them timothy a few years ago when I first got them, but they picked at it. I found they loved orchard grass and go crazy for it. At the most recent vet visit she talked about the bun with GI issues needing a possible molar trim if he didn’t start munching on some more hay soon. So my question is, should I try and switch over to a 1st cut timothy and see if they go for it? Does anyone have any suggestions of a good sweet timothy option that isn’t so soft?

  There are some Timothy/Orchard blends you could give a go. Do you buy a certain cut of the orchard grass hay? 1st cut is typically coaser and also contains more seed heads. The 2nd and 3rd cuts are softer hays.
  
  Could he be favouring one side of his mouth? Even with a coarser hay, it wouldn’t make much difference if he only chews on one side. But it could help maintain things after a molar trim.

  The orchard grass I’ve been buying is a 2nd cut and they seem to like that, but the brand I buy doesn’t offer any blends! Do you have a certain brand you suggest?!

  Small Pet Select makes really great hay that I’ve never had a problem with. Even a second cut timothy will have more fiber than orchard grass hay, I’m not sure that your bun will go for 1st cut timothy after orchard grass hay, they’re very different textures!

  I’ve heard good things about them before, so I’ll definitely check them out! Thanks for the tip about sticking with second cut, because I was contemplating if I should try first cut. Thank you!

  I noticed SPS does a sample box also. So you could do a trial that way. Oxbow does a Orchard/Timothy blend.
  
  My own rabbits get oat hay, which has a lot larger pieces.
