Hey everyone My rabbit Smokey is fully litter trained and usually is pretty good with aim but sometimes when she hops into her litterbox in a hurry, she sprays a bit off-sides and it goes on the wall/floor.

I had looked up urine guards to put in her cage and they were all very small, and for cages for rabbits who don’t use litterboxes. I use this type of litter box for Smokey :

        http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind…n=SHOP+FOR

The grates really come in handy for her feet to stay dry, but I’m not sure what to do about her occasional missing. She does this sometimes in her pan at work, too (I work at a preschool, she is the class pet). I know she is not doing it intentionally, but it’s almost as if the only urine guards made are ones for rabbits who don’t use litter boxes :/

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A lot of people end up having trouble with those pans. They really are too small. Try a rectangular litter box. Actually, the store of this site has good size boxes with high sides and also sells a screen you can sit on top of the litter.

I have seen other triangular boxes that are hooded and are much larger too.

Some boxes like these might be better alternatives also.

First has a removable lip or guard                              Second one has high sides but low entry

I agree with Jersey that the issue may be with how small the box is. I’d first try a larger rectangular box (even just a regular large cat box) which will have higher sides.

If it’s spraying the wall outside the cage, you can set something flat against the wall behind it to protect it, like coroplast squares. I actually have a problem with some seepage at the seams of my habitat edges also. You can also try a sheet of acrylic that leans against the wall, too, so you can wipe down any spray. You can get those at a hardware store, and they can cut them down for you. I once got a wide, but only a foot high cut piece that I propped in front of a bookcase to stop book nibbling. Clear and thick so stands up, see through, but not tasty so no nibbles on the acrylic sheet.

About the litterboxes from this store… I had looked at them before, but was unsure about them. They seem so big. I really like the one she has. The next size up that they sell at Petsmart really doesn’t offer that much more for sides. The square ones seems great, but I would really like the wire grating that she has with the litterbox currently.

The coroplast/acrylic seems like a great plan. I had been cutting rectangles of cardboard from boxes and using it, but I’m sure you know how that works. She fits fine in her litterbox, since she’s a dwarf, but it’s like sometimes she doesn’t aim right.

Do any of those High Back litterboxes come with the grates? Or is there a place to purchase them online if not?

Thanks for all of the responses so quickly

Also, I wanted to add that I like the litterbox she has now because it has little clips to keep it in one spot. Smokey has a tendency to move things around. If her litterbox isn’t there, then she’ll pee/poo in the spot it’s supposed to be. She’s naughty!

The bigger the litter box, the better – in my opinion. It gives bunny room to munch on hay and do her business. Sometimes, even flop. I have a large cat litter box (minus the top of course). It is very nice and my bunny loves it.

Yes, larger boxes are better. The bunnies seem to enjoy them more. And really.. what the bunnies like, the bunnies get lol

It’s actually very easy to keep a larger box in place. You can drill a small hole up near the top lip and just loop a ziptie thru it. Attach that with a dogclip to the pen. You can purchase screens to go over the litter on this site.

There seems to be more grated litter pans on the market now. If she likes to hang out on her box take care she doesn’t spend too much time on the wire. The screen in the store here is good because it creates a barrier but it flexes, not rigid like wire flooring.

Leith Petwerks sell this mat that is designed to go over wire floors.

You could make some sort of grate then use this matting over it. http://www.leithpetwerks.com/prodpage.cfm?prod_code=MS930

The also have 15 inch urine guards in case you hadn’t seen them.

If you prefer the triangular shape pans, there are ones like this, with the higher sides.

                           http://www.animalshelterstore.com/product.php?productid=69972&cat=0&page=1

Do you think she sometimes doesn’t turn around and pees over the front part?

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I didn’t think of drilling holes. With the cage I got her, it came with many extra zipties, plus from what I hear, they’re very cheap to purchase.

I like that plastic grate pictured, and I think Smokey would love it too. She doesn’t hang out in her litterbox, just uses it to go to the bathroom. She always jumps in and then turns around and backs her butt up USUALLY in the corner of her litterbox. BUt sometimes in a rush to go, like after a carride, she doesn’t fully put her bottom to the back.

Thank you so much for the help. I’ll definitely look into the bigger litterpans

Here’s another type of “lock on” litter pan that’s a corner style.

                              http://www.amazon.com/Super-Long-Litter-Cr…B001EUI0YS

I am not a big fan of the wire on top to prevent scattering, but I have a bunny that doesn’t kick litter out once she likes the brand I buy.

Petsmart has a selection of two locking litter pans or covered pans as well. Could also check out Petco for more litter box styles.
