Day 2 of meds. I have 8 inch long scratches down my arms and the medicine is all over me and not in Bee’s mouth.

I’ve never tranced a bunny, I tried it on Bee once to clip her nails and I wasn’t successful. I was able to come at her with the syringe when she was just sitting down but she was still sleepy from the surgery. So now she is fighting me big time and I can’t hold her without her kicking me to death to get away from the crazy med lady. And atm my mom is in bed sleeping and I wouldn’t want Bee to claw her up either.  I think it is now at the point though where it is a 2 man job.

Any suggestions?  I gave up and squirted it on her forhead and paws hoping she would lick it off.

        Ouch

Thank goodness the vets clipped her nails for me…

trancing isnt a good idea for meds anyway, don’t want her to choke on the stuff. My best ideas would be to drop a towel on her, scoop her up, keep her wrapped in towel to get the job done. I would hold Monkey in my lap with my knees up to my chest to keep her secure against me so she couldn’t lash out to give her eye droops, you could try that. Or, you could squirt the meds onto some of Bee’s fav nommies, see if she’ll eat it that way.

Right…duh I don’t even know why I said that lol. How could you give a tranced bunny liquid meds. Don’t mind me it’s been a long day at work. I was just thinking of ways that I could be in control of her. Like I said I’ve never even tranced one because long ago I was told not to because it was bad. Anyways. Yea that was stupid of me someone slap me *bonk* Towel…great idea. Thank you. Yup my brain is fried for the night.

Yeah, either wrap her in towel to protect your arms, or place her up high where she won’t jump down from and block her with your body. Another way is sit on your legs, place her beween them and sort of brace her there, head facing away from you, then lean over, secure head and place syringe in side of mouth.
I’ve also sat in a recliner chair with my knees bent and sat them up against my chest. Placed syringe in side of mouth then leaned so they are more horizontal before I squirt in the med.
She won’t take it mixed in food?

It’s Val and Torb …it really smells gross …like molasses. She doesn’t like it at all. She did lick it off her head and feet though. But now her face is sticky. Sigh. I will try maybe on some banana in the morning and if that doesn’t work I’ll try to towel

Is there another person who could secure her on all fours on a kitchen counter while you open her mouth and put the meds in?

My favorite method is to get behind the bun on your knees, position her body between her knees so she can’t back up and is kind of held securely, then put your hand on her shoulders and hold them down. It helps if she’s facing a wall, so she doesn’t have anywhere to go in the forward direction anyway (they seem to struggle less). Then stick the syringe in, and give meds. This worked really well for Hannah and allowed me to give meds by myself without picking her up or even having to catch her really (it helped to have her in a pen initially, so I wasn’t chasing her all over).

You got some good advice on position already- and you could always add something sweet to her dose right before you give it- like apple juice, etc.  Just make sure not to give too much sweet stuff with it.

OUCH! I used to struggle with Jack.  I recently found a method that works very well – it is along the same lines as what Elrohwen advised with a slight difference. Take one hand and put it over her face separating your pointer and middle finger to let her nose/mouth come through, but the rest of your hand covers her eyes and keeps her head securely in place. It will be sort of a “V” over her face. Then with your other hand put the syringe in the side of her mouth (while with your fingers of your other hand that is holding the V position your sort of open her mouth)  and squirt it in. (Not too fast).

                          Hopefully that makes sense!

With my Comet, none of the holding things worked, he is just too good at slipping out of my hands unless I pick him up and have a firm hold. I gave in and he got mushed banana twice a day so he’d eat his meds. He couldn’t wait to eat them then! Too much sugar for him for my taste but…it meant he ate them all up so I guess it’s okay!

                                Ouch!

I injected Beulah’s meds into a spoonful of applesauce. It was Baytril, which is kind of thick, so it held together well. I don’t know if that’s cheating, but she was pretty happy about the treat.

I was able to cheat with Hershey’s Baytril, she got the tablets and I could cut them up and hide them in raisins.

Both of my bunnies licked up their metacam like a champ – that stuff must taste like candy. Though Hannah only did that the first day after her teeth trimming, when she felt ok – after that she wouldn’t eat, and wouldn’t lick up her metacam either, so I had to resort to the knee hold technique.

Just want to add, even though it’s summer, that it’s probably worth it to throw on an old, light, long-sleeved shirt. Buttoned at the wrist, so it’s harder to be scratched. Like wearing gloves to avoid bites – just a little added protection. Wear it like a smock and you won’t accidentally get meds squirted on your clothes for the day either.
