Hey guys, I’ve been out for awhile (super busy with school and work) but I’ve got some bad news…We have ROACHES!  Not that I hate the little buggers, but they do need to be cleaned out lest our house become bug city.  The exterminator is coming on Tuesday, and he told me the fumes would be toxic for buns!  He said they need to be removed for a minimum of 8 hrs, so now I’m stuck with moving my little babies somewhere else for at least a day.  Cheeky, my Netherland is VERY senstivie and hates leaving his territory (my basement), it’s so bad that he can stop eating because of it.  To top it off, he’s in the middle of a rather heavy molt, which probably won’t help matters.  I don’t forsee any issues with Guppy being moved for a little while, but the 2 aren’t completely bonded yet (in fact we had a scrape last night with Cheeky being the aggressor and trying to mount Guppy.  When Guppy refused Cheeky had a jab at him and pulled out a tuft of fur).

Unfortunately, the basement happens to be hardest hit in terms of the roaches, so I’m sure the exterminator will be fuming up that area pretty well.  I’m so worried that the residual pesitcides could be harmful to the buns, and I don’t think I’d let them back down there for at least a week.  What’s worse is that I’ve got teeny little guys (both under 3lbs) so I know they’d be even more susceptible to the fumes than a larger bun might be.  Has anyone had anything like this happen to them before?

oh man, sounds like you’re in for a fun time. I don’t have any advice but you have all my best wishes. Wish you lived closer, I’d keep them for you.

Wow! I feel your pain. I had an ant infestation last year and called an exterminator. They told me that I would have to leave my house for 8 hours. I told them I had rabbits and he said that they had to leave as well. Luckily, I’m not too far from my rabbit rescue, so I bundled them up and went there for the day. Afterwards, I decided not to ever do that again and used a more environmentally friendly way to get rid of ants. I havent’t seen them since. Sorry…I don’t have any advice for you either. Maybe someone can keep them for you for the day? I know that won’t help you with Cheeky too much.

              Aww thank you kralspace

Luckily my best friend is a fellow bun lover, with 2 of her own and she did offer to keep them for me. I’m just worried about Cheeky in a new place though, I really hope he doesn’t go into a bout of stasis because of this. I might leave them there for at least 2-3 days just to be on the safe side in terms of the buns.

I just hope everything goes ok.

I guess that’s one “plus” to living in a cold region! I haven’t seen bugs in months I admit, I’d rather see cockroaches in my home then have to run my car for half an hour to get it warm!! (Don’t tell-but Dave is scared of bugs and I had to get the cockroach out of room in Cuba LOL )

MUle team borax can find at walmart or grocery stores.mixed with sugar is great for killing roaches–they eat it and die. also diatomaceous earth food grade is great to spray into the cracks of electrical plugs and cracks in general. even if you do exterminate still buy these things as it will kill the colonies. out both things where the roaches live and frequent. the exterminator wont get them all.

carries the de and the spray bottle to spray into cracks–probably cost you like 20 bucks or so for the sprayer and the 1# of de–which is alot about a gallon size bag full. If you lived near amesbury mass I could sell you some as i bought a 50# bag when our dogs has fleas.

Thanks for the advice guys, luckily the exterminator said our infestation wasn’t too bad, so he didn’t have to spray so much. Guppy and Cheeky spent a night at my friends, Cheeky was alright! She said they just sat in bunny balls right next to each other, so I guess they were closer than I thought! Guppy had a good time, he got free run of her house, and she said he was bounding up and downstairs while Cheeky just waited patiently for his friend to return awwww he’s such a sweetie. I felt bad for her other buns though, her two were kept inside a room, while the guests were spoiled!

That’s exactly what I did for ants. You want to kill the colony (and queen). The exterminator won’t get all of them. I used the borax mixed with sugar and the ants were gone in a matter of days. Once in a while I might see one or two, I get out the mixture and place it where I see them and their gone! It’s a good environmentally friendly way to get rid of bugs and I don’t have to worry about my bunnies inhaling toxic fumes (or myself).
