Hi my names Danielle. I have a bunny shes about a year old and I’m thinking of getting another female bunny. What would be the best way to introduce the two bunnies to eachother?

I would suggestgoing to the shelters/bunny rescues and having bunny dates. they have a section about bonding on here too. then check http://www.rabbit.org too and type in bonding in the search. it wouldn’t let me paste for some reason. look in the other section of the forum to, there is plenty of advise!Good luck!

Thanks for replying. I don’t have any rabbit rescues in my area so I’ll probaly just get a bunny at a farm, or search ads in my area for them. So the bunny dates wouldn’t be an option for me. Most likely I’ll just pick a bunny and bring her home. I’ll look into the article on bonding thanks. I hope this works out for my bunny and the one I’ll bring home.

              welcome to binky bunny xirishsweetheartx!

Is your bunny spayed yet?  Where do you live?  If you’re in the US http://www.petfinder.com/ is a great place to find a house rabbit in need of a good home. By adopting instead of buying, it saves a life. Kudos to Amy for mentioning adopting too

Bunny bonding really works well if both bunnies are neutered first and you bring your bunny to pick out his or her new friend. You should take a look at the bonding guide on the site since it’s very helpful.  There are also a number of topics about bonding too. It’s very important to introduce bunnies in a neutral zone – a space neither has been in  – since they are VERY territorial by nature.

No my bunny isn’t spayed I chose not to I’ve had a bad experience with getting a animal spayed. When I do get another bunny it will be of the same sex so no unwanted litters will happen. I’m in Michigan in an area were the animal shelters and bunny rescues aren’t very close. I don’t plan on buying a bunny prob lay just finding someone who needs me to adopt their bunny from them. The only thing so far I know about bonding is doing it in a neutral zone which I plan on doing. I’m gonna try and bring my bunny to meet a few bunnies to see which one I should take home. I know she would love to have a friend when I got her she came with a sibling who passed not much longer than an hour I got her. I’m thankful for your input and I plan on researching a bunch before I go get a new bunny.

Another thing I have been searching for a reasonable price on a bunny play pen they are crazy expensive anyone know of any less expensive bunny play pens or a easy way to make a great fenced play area in a limited amount of space.

I’m sorry that you had such a bad experience with getting your other animal spayed but it really is the best thing for any animal and especially if you are going to bond even 2 females. Females tend to be extremely hard to bond with each other and they can fight. Also unspayed females have an 85% chance of contracting uterine cancer.

Here is a House Rabbit Contact in Michigan to help you find a rabbit experienced vet:

My feelings are that perhaps you shouldn’t consider getting another rabbit unless you truly understand the difficulties of bonding rabbits and the importance of spaying your rabbit.

And I just went on Petfinders and there are pages and pages of rescues that have rabbits that need homes.

I went on pet finders and looked to. None of those rabbits are close to my area all are about an hour or more away. If I get another rabbit it will be one that is already spayed. There are both up and downs to getting an animal spayed in my experience everything everyone says about the good things that happen when an animal is spayed were the complete opposite for my animal for the rest of her life. I don’t want to take the chance of that happening again. My animal that got spayed was the sweetest animal before and the meanest most unhappy animal after. I understand the difficulties of bonding rabbits if I didn’t I wouldn’t be on this forum getting advice from others who have done it. I’ll take into consideration what you have said. Thank you for your honest comments.

maybe you could talk to a rescue about transportation, some may do this. Also maybe check out craigslist, sadly people are always dumping animals on there.

I would work something out with a resue but they are way far away if they weren’t this would be way easier picking a rabbit. I checked on craigslist no luck. I’ll keep on looking it won’t be until I can afford to get another one and they play pen I want for my rabbits.

You were talking about a cheap pen, well if you didn’t want to go the NIC condo route, what I noticed was after I built my nic condo i had tons of the panels left over. I just connected them two high and as long as I needed and instant pen. It was about 15 dollars total.

No I’m not looking for a cage I have a cage and a wooden condo that was built for me. I need to get a play pen like the one attached  but not at this crazy cost but thanks I’ll keep looking.

Do you have access to NIC cubes?  You could probably whip together a pretty neat collapsible pen using NIC cubes, cable ties and a couple of clips to hold the end together.  The cube panels could fold up and flatten for storage.

No I don’t have access to those. I got the money for the one I want so I’ll just buy that one.

Well it looks like your mind is made up about your current bunny not being spayed, (I am sorry for your bad experiences – they really are the exception).   It also looks like you are aware of the challenges that may arise with bringing in another bunny.  If your worry is about pregnancy, and you were already planning on getting a spayed female, why not consider a neutered male?

You may find, especially with another female rabbit, that that combination may offer even more challenges as there is a heirarchy many times between same sex bunnies that will cause aggression. Have you thought about getting a neutered male? You wouldn’t have to worry about unexpected litters this way. That might prove to be easier. But ultimately bonding works when both rabbits are not dominant or at least one is willing to step down.

Usually same sex are more difficult, in general, than opposite sexes.

Good Luck and keep us updated!

Yes I see why getting a male that is neutered might make this easier on myself and my bunny. She was a pair for most of her life. So getting a male or female I don’t think would be a problem with her. She loves the company. But now it sounds like I should lean towards a male to avoid the aggressive behaivor she might show towards a female. The cost might be more to get a male that has been neutered but that shouldn’t be a problem. I’m starting the bunny search this weekend so wish me luck, I hope I find the perfect bunny friend for my bunny.

Thank you BinkyBunny for your advice.

Good luck finding a friend for your bunny!

I concur, you should look for a neutered male. If you can get one from a shelter, that’s best as they often only adopt animals once they are spayed or neutered.

If you are looking for a play area for them, I think walmart has cheap kids playpens with bottoms and roofs. Sometimes it’s cheaper or better to get products that were ment for someone else (kids, birds or cats) and use them for your bunny!

another good thing about going to a shelter is that many of them will allow you to do bunny dates to see if there might be one that would get along better than another.

And there shouldn’t be any difference in the price. I’m not sure where or why neutered males would be more expensive anyway, since their surgery is usually much easier and less invasive than spays.

                                          Keep us updated!

The kids play pen doesn’t work. Coney ate his way out of one while we were on vacation in august.

Ok I just bought the bunny play pen, and I got another bunny!!!! I guess it’s a boy I got him from the pet store down the street he looked so sad in his little glass box so I had to have him. But I have not introduced the two bunnies to eachother just yet. I want him to get used to his new home. He is very friendly and has been held alot by the workers there and was in a cage with another bunny so hes used to other bunnies being around which is great. But he is not neutered so until he is he will not be left alone with my bunny. But I will get pictures of him when I get my camera back from my brother. He is black and has floppy ears which is what I wanted. He’s sooooo cute!!!!!!

                                                Awe. You’ve got great instinct with holding off on intros until the newbie is acclimated to its new "forever home."  Plus the other curious bun can become safely acquainted with the new addition.  Be sure to try intros in a neutral territory and a good read right here on this site;

Ok I put them in the play pen that is new to both bunnies. They circled eachother smelling eachother then my bunny got on top of the other and you know what happens then. Which I’m clueless should my female bunny be doing this to the new bunny. I thought if anything the new bunny which is suppose to be a male I have to make sure when he’s confortable with me would be getting on top of her which he tried but she did it first. Which confuses me anyone know why she would of done that is it normal. And another thing after I pulled her from him after they started doing that I put her in her cage and she keeps stomping her back foot!! She has never done that before. Like she’s mad or something. She seems to like him though and maybe she was mad when I took her away from him. They sure didn’t waste no time. So anyone know if her reaction is normal or not a good sign? Also what should my next step be I can’t put them together without them trying to do that!! He will be getting neutered as soon as I have the money and step up the appointment.

wait, I’m confused.  I thought you were going to wait to put them together.  I know you said you don’t want an unexpected pregnancy, so because mounting is also a dominant move that both male and female bunnies may do while bonding, then I’m not sure how this bonding is going to work without a pregnancy happening.   And not allowing them to mount will hinder the bonding process.  They will need to go through that to establish who is the boss bun.

My suggestion: Make an appointment to neuter him asap, and just have their pens near each other so they can get used to each other, but don’t let them be together.  FYI, nuetered males can still get a unspayed female pregnant within a month of the neuter surgery.

Her thumping is normal – she is stressed, mad or doing it as a warning.  All of which is a normal reaction.

Signs of true aggression is what you have watch out for – lunging, growiing, ears back, tail up.

I didn’t think they would do that right away so I wasn’t worried. I just wanted to see if they would fight I only have 7 days to see if this will work ok which sucks. But there were no signs of aggression which is good right. I’m not putting them together like that again. I have his cage in the play pen and I let her run around it and they were smelling eachother through the bars. And I know about neutered males being able to get them pregnant within a month after surgery but thanks for the tip. So do you think just letting her and him sniff eachother might help them bond until they can be together a month after his surgery. I’m calling tomorrow to set up the appointment. I’m starting to think that maybe I should get her altered as well could this help them bond better? I wouldn’t have gotten him if his personatly wasn’t so much like my bunny and lucky enough they seem to like eachother already. I wish this pet store altered their pets it would of made this way easier. She is definetly showing her dominant side towards him, and marking her territory.

OH good, definitely good to wait before putting them together. I think it would be a wonderful idea to get her spayed too. That would make it easier, especially since she is showing her definite dominant side! Oh, and one thing too about letting them sniff through the bars – Bunnies can really give each other nasty bites through bars (mine got her lip bit off – it was sewn back on). So if they are showing any aggression you may want to get some mesh and put it around the bottom of their cage or pen.

I do think that them getting used to each other is a good idea. But since they are both not spayed/neutered, their need to mark up the place may get a bit too overwhelming. So you will have to make the decision about what you can or cannot tolerate. Once they are bonded, the marking should stop, but since you still have to schedule surgery and then wait a month, this could be a long stinky messy wait.

If it does get to be too much, then you could separate them until right after their surgeries, so then they will be next to each other for a month, but at least their hormones will be dying down during that time.

I know you must be extremely anxious about the spay and neuter. Finding an experienced rabbit savvy vet is sooooo important. So many places think it’s the same as cats and dogs, and it’s not. Do you need guidance in finding a rabbit savvy vet, or finding out how to find out if your vet is rabbit savvy enough?

The thing about the vet is I only found one within like 20 miles from me that handles rabbits. I’m gonna call tomorrow and ask a bunch of questions.

What would you suggest I ask??

The worst thing about this is I’m sooooo nervous about getting them altered since I had a bad exsperience. But I want her to have a friend, and it seems that they like eachother. I can get the money as soon as the end of next week. Getting him altered doesn’t worry me since the male surgery is easy than the female.

If I do get her spayed is there a long wait period for her to heal?

If rabbits only had one baby at a time I would breed them for another bunny lol You will have to see the new bunny everyone who seen him said the babies would be beautiful if they had them which is so not happening lol

                                                              Great questions!

What questions you should ask your vet.  This link is directly to questions you should ask, and it has the answers that the vet SHOULD give if they know what they are doing http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html#questions

Here’s a list of HRS recommended vets ,  but still go through the screening process.

Females do take longer to heal than males.   Females do feel pretty lousy for the first few days, though they need to be at least nibbling on something by the next morning after surgery.  There are ways to help get nourishment in a bunny that doesn’t eat – more about that later if need be.  Here is a great link to pre & post operative care

Lastly, I can’t imagine how scary this must be for you knowing that had a bad experience before. I’m sorry about what had happened. I think that if you become confident in finding a rabbit savvy vet and become knowledgable about what to do both pre & post surgery, then that may help relieve some of your fears.

Can you share what happened last time?  Maybe that way we can help you understand what went wrong, and how it can be prevented next time.   If it’s too painful, then it’s okay.

I wish rabbits only had one baby at a time too!!!  Then maybe the shelters wouldn’t be so overcrowded and rabbits wouldn’t be the third most euthanized pet in the U.S.    I mean, really, it’s people not caring for their animals, but at least if there wasn’t so many…well, then there wouldn’t be so many.  Simple enough.

If you do decide to spay, we’re here to help you through with questions and any emotional comfort we can offer!

Thank you have been a big help.

Well what happened when I got my animal spayed. It was so sad afterwards she was depressed and became very unhappy and hated everyone. She became very mean to everyone and wasnt as friendly with me like she was. And was like that for the rest of her life. It completely changed her.

I know I wish they had one cuz my two rabbits having a baby would be the cutest. My own in the pic is black and white and the new bunny is black with floppy ears. The babies if u could picture them would be super cute.

I hope this works out and they get along. I don’t have the heart to take him to the shelter if it doesn’t.

I’m going to call the vet in a little bit. I might get her fixed first since it will take longer than I’ll take him. First I’ll read the websites you showed me then I’m gonna call. I’ll post updates on when the surgerys are and of course how they went.

Ok I called 3 vet places. They all close before one today so I was a little late calling them. One did pick up the one closest to my area and they don’t perform that kind of surgery. But I went on House Rabbit Society website and got the recommended vet in michigan. So I’m going to call them on Monday, it’s a bit of a drive not to bad but it’s worth it.

xirishsweethearttx – that same situation with a spay happened with one of my friends rabbits. Her opinion of why this happened was that the vet didn’t use pain meds – I’m certain he did for the surgery (but I cannot be sure, I cannot imagine that he didn’t) and he didn’t give her any pain meds to take home either. Now, I cannot be sure this is the case, my friend has lots of rescued rabbits though and had all the other rabbits altered (by another vet – she was not happy about this of course w/this particular vet) so I imagine her feelings are on target about what happened.

Make sure when you talk to the vet about spays that you find out what type of pain medications they use for surgery and what pain meds they will give you to take home for after care. Pain meds are so important for our rabbits.

As I still undeiced on getting her spayed since I don’t want the same thing happening. But he is getting neutered cuz he has to. I’m so worried about getting her spayed. It’s such a big deal exspecially with the females. The males not so much, the surgery is easier with them as I’ve heard. I’m still thinking if I should get her spayed she is such a good bunny now what if she isn’t after.

Ok Great News. I put my bunny in the play pen while the male bunny is in his cage which is also in the play pen. They kissed and played through the play pen. She did not stomp her foot during or after there visit. Also she was not pooping everywhere while she was in the play pen like she did the other day when they first met. They even tried grooming eachother. Love at first sight or what! They never stopped licking eachother through the bars. Neither was aggressive. I bet they wonder why they can’t just be together without the bars. She sure was trying to get in there. But it will be I’d say about two months before they can officially be together. That’s if both of them have surgery.

One that doesn’t alter their pets. I never got her fixed and still am undeiced because of a bad exsperience. But he will be getting fixed asap. As of her right now I’m still thinking about it and reading these forums and everyones support and help is really helping me right now. Thank you everyone.

She seems to be happy being around him even though its only been a few days. And if I got a female with her being bossy to him at first I don’t think a female would of put up with that. Which is kinda funny how bunny relationships are a little like peoples lol

They have one vet there that does the rabbit surgerys, she was on the recommended vet list on the rabbit society website. I can only afford to get him fixed which will be $120. To get her fixed is a little over $200 which is really exspensive. But I have to get one fixed and he will be the one getting fixed.

I had my Thumper neutered a little over a week ago and this board was sooo helpfull in seeing me through it.

Hopefully, they can be together soon w/out the bars!

And hearing from you that your bunny just went through what mine will be going through helps also. So if you have any tips about how you handled him with the surgery then I’d be more than happy to hear them.

                                                                                        https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&forumid=2&postid=13400&view=topic

It’s a small thread, but his recovery time was really short lived. Just one day, however, I was questioning EVERYTHING! LOL…I was sooo worried.

I’m sure they will all have their own unique ways of recovering. Thumpy ate quickly but didn’t drink and did have strange poops. He moved around but lounged most of the day, which is to be expected. His recovery was pretty much non-eventful.  I wish you the same luck and I, as well as many on the board will be right here to help you through it.

I have no ideas for a name for him that is if its a he I can’t really tell. The vet will tell me the for sure sex when I take him to see her. The people at this pet store have no idea about anything to do with these animals. They can’t even tell you the for sure sex. They seem to really like eachother even if it is just through the bars. When I got him he was very mellow and shy. Now he is very hyper and loves to play. And thanks.

I’ve went blank with picking a name mostly cuz I’m unsure of the sex. I checked him today and he looks like a she. But he might be to young to tell. If he is to young to tell, he might be to young for surgery. It would of helped if this pet store had more info on the subject.

I guess after his vet visit it’ll be easier to find a name for him/her???

Everytime I think of it I think of Bambi lol I should of called my female bunny thumper since she thumped her foot when I took her from my other bunny.

Neutering is a much less invasive procedure, so the recovery time and costs are less. You will need to keep them apart for one month post-surgery. Also – the important things are to encourage him to eat post surgery. If he’s not eating by the next day, call your vet. Ideally they may send you home with pain meds, since it tends to really help them eat more quickly. However, most boys come home from a neuter interested in eating. You’ll want to limit his activity for several days – up to a week. Also, adding a soft blankie or faux sheepskin to his house would be a good idea too.

I am really concerned since your girl bunny could very well be pregnant after just one *encounter* with your boy bunny. I understand your fear based on your previous bad experience. I really do hope you will get her spayed ASAP, since with females it is extremely important with uterine cancer at a staggering 85% in unspayed females.

I helped a lady who had 2 males and 1 female and she just let them out to play and said she was watching them – when I took her into be spayed the vet said she was pregnant. The lady I helped was very surprised she was pregnant. Luckily we got her spayed.

Maybe I will end up changing my mind but I don’t know if I will. I think the cost of getting her spayed out weighs the cost of not getting her spayed. Also the insane price of getting her spayed I don’t think is worth the pain she would go through afterwards.

I’m trying to prevent her from becoming pregnant as I have said. My number one reason for getting him fixed is so that she won’t get pregnant. As of now I don’t even know if my bunny will be getting fixed because I am unsure of even the sex since the pet store people didn’t tell me my bunnies age or the for sure sex. I will find out more next Wednesday when I take my bunny to the vet and I promise to post about everything. Thanks for all your concerns and all the help.

LOL…as long as they are kept apart until you sex them and neuter him if he is a he…I’m sure you are making the right decision.  Your previous experience was rather unfortunate.

Still bonding through the cage. What  I found out so far is that the new bunny is already littered trained, and my bunny wants nothing to do with the litter box believe me I tried lol This new bunny wow is he crazy, I let him run around in the play pen. He likes to shut his cage door then tries to open it to get in. It’s kinda strange lol He jumps all over the place when I let him out. I can’t wait to go to the vet with him/her so I can finally know the sex. Maybe they are both girls, but I’m leaning more towards he’s a young male and you can’t really tell yet. The vet will know. So I have plenty of times to think of names

Cafe Press has some cute things but dogs and cats have that dept. locked! They have clothes, throws…just about EVERYTHING w/their pics on them.

You might find one with a bunny on it. I checked out cafe press I didn’t find anything super cute. Most all say adopt and they didn’t have cute bunnies on them.
