just curious … i’m looking to buy miko a new roomier cage.  what would be an ideal dimensions for an indoor bunny cage.. for example i was looking at this one it’s 30″L x 18″W x 16.5″H  im dimensionally challanged lol.

my bun is a medium-ish lop bun if that is of any help. im looking at cages with levels but my main concern is roomieness and saftey (all of a sudden he’s pulling on his cage at night to get free) any suggestions ??? thanks

bigger! the smallest i’d recommend is 4×2 feet, and even that is too small once you add a litterbox and food, toys, etc… plus… cages that size are over a hundred dollars. i would skip a cage altogether and go the xpen route or build a NIC condo. we are talking about this in the “xpen” thread in this section if you want to look over there.

Under Bunny Info, click on “Cool Habitats” and chack out all kinds of huge and wonderful indoor abodes for your bunny. The dimensions you listed are WAY too small…..

Have you thought about making one? Cages are pretty expensive and they are usually too small..You could make an NIC Condo and then you can build up to save space but give them more room!

Hi Mikosmom!  Do you have anyone to help you?

Here is a “supply” list for NIC condos:

Wire cube panels – They go by many names, Neat Idea Cubes, Wire Cube Storage, you can find them at Target, Walmart, even CostCo has them occassionally.  You want the ones with the holes that are about 2″ square, I have noticed that Neat Idea Cube(NIC) brand has changed their product and makes some with the smaller holes which you need for the sides and top of the cage and ones with very large holes that you can use for the floor and cover with hardboard. You want the ones made of ALL WIRE.  There are some with thin plastic sides and this will not do.

Zip ties aka cable ties- For your first project I strongly suggest at least 200 of them.  You will be experimenting and you will make errors.

Wire cutters – They are great for trimming the leftover part of the zip tie once in place. I do not recommend using a cerpenters knife – you can and will cut yourself.  A very small craft saw works great too.

Small craft saw – I use this to nitch out the extra tabs that get in the way of placing flooring so I can make a straight cut.  I have one that looks like this and there is a handle attached:

                  30450 Saw Blade

                  Lumber:

1 x 2″ lumber – you will need this to support the shelves if you plan on an open floor plan and need the additional support.

                  Flooring:

Hardboard – I use this cheapy sheet lumber to cut and make flooring, I cover them with peel & stick linoleum tile for easy clean – up I then cover this with varying flooring like sea grass mats, rag rugs, stone tile or carpet OR

Coroplast – This is basically plastic cardboard used for making signs.  If you know a real estate agent you can score some cheap, otherwise you will have to get it from a sign shop and it is not cheap.

NOTE: Since NIC brand has huge holes for the floor-type panels I do not recommend placing anything flimsy or thin over it to use as flooring!  Your rabbit can get hurt if it gives way.
