Hi! Is there anyone else here with a rabbit that has megacolon?

My princess was diagnosed with megacolon last year, and since then she’s gone through several treatments until things stabilized, including preventive treatments like taking domperidone every day.

What I find strange is that, since the diagnosis, it seems like she doesn’t gain weight or muscle mass, even though she’s at an appropriate weight. I weigh her every week, and she fluctuates between 1900g and 1830g depending on the day. Since I live in a tropical country, she tends to eat less on hotter days.

Sometimes I feel like I’m being hypervigilant and paranoid, I’m always checking her weight, feeling her bones, and monitoring everything, but I’d really like to hear from others who are going through the same thing.

Overall, she’s very healthy. She eats a diet based mostly on hay and 60g of pellets daily (Nutropica Super Premium, for anyone who wants to check the composition, it’s the best and most expensive in my country). She takes 0.7 ml of domperidone every 12 hours, and she’s super active, she loves exploring, even at 4 years old.

Thank you! I’ll attach some recent photos from Google Drive for context, I weighed her on Saturday and she was 1,836 g.

I don’t have a megacolon bunny. But I do know that it can be hard to keep weight on these bunnies or get them to gain weight. The problem is a lot of the typical things people do to encourage weight gain in, say, elderly bunnies does not work for megacolon bunnies because it can make symptoms worse.

That’s true! It’s a challenge and requires daily monitoring. I feel somewhat relieved, in a way, knowing that her not-so-low weight is actually a reflection of the megacolon and not some unknown or untreated illness hahaha. The good thing is that she’s not a picky eater and will eat hay like a horse XD
