My bunny of almost 9 years old passed away at the weekend. She was always so lively even up to her final days, still acted like a young bun. Even though she was getting older and was diagnosed with arthritis a couple of years ago it was still a shock. She had so much personality. Her sister misses her as do I.

The vet said the arthritis wasn’t too much of a concern as she still seems healthy and didn’t appear to be in pain. They tried some medication for a while but it didn’t appear to make a lot of difference.

When I found her she was on her side, head cocked back, mouth open, eyes open and ears up (lop rabbit). My partner thinks she could have had a seizure due to the position we found her in.

Is it common for a rabbit to suddenly have a fatal seizure out of the blue?

What else could it have been? She was up to date with her vaccinations

I’m sorry about your bunny. Losing them never seems to get easier.

What you are describing sounds like normal contracture that occurs postmortem. Everything tightens up and the head will curl back like that.

As for the why, we really don’t have any way of knowing. A nine year old bunny can have any one of many underlying issues that you most likely were unaware of. As they age, different parts of their body start to fail them. I doubt it was a seizure though, unless it was secondary to something else that was wrong.
