Charlie has been on the baytril Otic  ear drops for 10 days now. She’s eating  and pottying well and I have not had to use the gabapentin for pain.

However, she seem to be shaking her head more and scratching her ears. The vet said it’s an outer ear infection. Can the ear drops be bothering her hours after they are administered? I expect she would shake her head when the drops are placed and for a while afterwards. But do they continue to bother?

She does go back Tuesday for a recheck. I’m just worried it’s not clearing up. Surely the drops aren’t making it worse?

No head tilt or other unusual behavior. Just seems to be messing with her ears more.

There could be goo in the outer ear canal, ie wax and debris. The drops are supposed to soften that up so it can come out, sometimes it’s even a bit protruding so you can see it if you look inside the ears, sometimes its even possible to pull out stuff with tweezers. If there is debris that can’t come out, your vet should be able to  express it.

Another possibility is that the drops are  irritating the lining of the ear canal. It’s great that you have a recheck scheduled.

How is her appetite now? How is her activity level etc?

I agree. A lot of times, gunk will become loose and it will be moving around inside the ear canal causing a “tickle”.
