        Hello everyone!

I have a 1 year old mini lop bunny called Misso and recently i’ve noticed a small fur loss around her up thigh. Looking closely, i saw small white flakes looking just like keratin (no scab, or redness/inflamation and the area wasn’t wet).

She doesn’t live with other bunnies or animals, so i hardly think it might be mites. She’s on molting season (we are entering summer in Brazil) and i’ve read that some owners noticed dry skin on molting rabbits, is that true? I brushing her everyday on molting season.

Also, since i can see better the thigh skin, i noticed a more like “purple” tendon, might it be vein or is it a bruise? I’m with her 24/7 since i work from home and i can’t remember a situation that she bruised herself, or an accident etc.

I’m going to watch closely and talk to my vet, but i wanted to know if dry skin/flaky is normal during molting and when to be concerned.

Besides the small fur loss, she’s eating, drinking, pooping, acting and exerting normally! Thankfully.

Thank you so much! And sorry for the pic, she didn’t stopped moving and i thought it was better to not stress her.

Rabbits can get dry skin when they molt, so that could be what you’re seeing.

Most (probably all) rabbits have mites on them. They get them from their mother. Its perfectly normal as long as the rabbit’s own immune defense keeps the numbers low. Just keep an eye on it, if it is mites that need treatment, it will get “worse”, i e more skin flakes on a bigger area and eventually also scabs. The scabs are easier felt than seen, bc they’re typically skin colored. The thigh is however not a typical place for fur mites to first show up.

The purple thing looks like a vein to me.

Thank you so much for replying, i was already so anxious!

It’s my first time as a bunny mom and as long i got educated by my veterinary before i adopted Missô, some surprises keep happening hahaha.

I’ll keep an eye on her and see how the fur loss and dryness is going. Thank you so much again!

I agree that it looks relatively healthy and non-concerning at this point. If flakes continue to form/populate, I’d be more worried, but an occasional dry skin patch/flakes from normative molting is fine! Many rabbits will have patchy molts, where sections of fur release, exposing bare skin for all to see.

Thank you so much! I’ve never seen her molting so heavily then i got concerned. I’ll surely keep on eye on her and watch how things will turn out.

                  Thank you again!
