Hi, I made a rookie mistake and my unbonded rabbits got to each other last night:(  I know it was a terrible mistake, I was really tired and missed something.

That said, the smaller one got pretty beat up. Enough fur pulled out to look like another rabbit. It was everywhere:( thankfully I don’t see any serious injuries, but there is one spot either skin got pulled off or cut with the bunnies teeth. It is red, bled a little but now an open sore. I put some Neosporin And some cleansig solution on it. He mostly licked it off now. Question is, can I do anything else at home? There aren’t any regular vets nearby that could see him as emergency, so id have to take him an hour and a half to a place if needed. It seems like the ordeal might not be worth it given the injuries but wanted to ask here in case I’m making a bad choice. I do have a local vet appointment Monday.

        Thanks,

        Susanne

I think as long as you try to keep the sore clean, it will be fine, certainly until Monday in any case. I assume it’s too small to need sutures.

Plain Neosporin (without an added painkiller) is bunny safe. Your bun is very likely to lick off any type of ointment though, if the sore is in a place where he can reach it.

Try to distract him from licking the sore too much, obviously.

I’m sorry this accident happened, but accidents do happen.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I was thinking the same and got some safe ointment. He actually has a couple more scratches too but they don’t look as bad. And does not look deep, just kinda big and raw so I can’t imagine it would need sutures. I’ll be monitoring closely.

You do need to be careful because sometimes when fur is pulled out violently, it takes the skin with it. Sometimes it’s just to top layer of skin and it looks like an abrasion, other times it is deeper and the underlying tissue is exposed. If it just resembles an abrasion, then I think you’re OK applying ointment and monitoring until Monday. Then you can reevaluate whether or not you think he needs a vet to look at it.

Thank you! Yes, I think the fur ripping is what tore off the skin. It might be more than an abrasion, a couple spots definitely took off a layer or more of skin. He’s been licking it and it looks worse and even bleeding a little today, but did spray with a saline solution and see no sign of infection.. and he is acting normal, eating, doing zoomies and playing etc, so as of now I think we are ok without an emergency room visit but I’ll be with him all day in case we need to go.
