How is your bun doing now? Have you seen any poop?
If the stomach is full but theres little food or gas in the gi tract, it points to a partial blockage in the intestines. Proper treatment for that is fluids and pain meds. At that stage, gut motility meds are very much contraindicated. Instead, a spasmolytic drug can be given to help relax the smooth muscle in the intestines. Fluids should preferably be given intravenously, as a drip, the bun (obviously) needs to stay at the vet for that. The next best thing is sub q fluids. The hope is that the fluids help hydrate and soften the partial blockage so it can move away. Fluids by mouth won’t do that.
CC is important, but you should make it very sloppy and only give a few ml per serving so the stomach doesn’t get too full again. You can syringe a few ml of water as well.
Pain relief is very important, this condition is painful. 0.8 ml of dog metacam contains 1.2 mg active substance (meloxicam). A rabbit with a partial obstruction needs a high dose meloxicam, up to 1.5 mg per kilo body weight and day for 5 days. Pepcid (famotidine) can be given to protect the stomach lining from the meloxicam.
It’s good if the bun can move around. It is important to keep her warm. Try to entice her to start eating, f ex with fragrant herbs. Dont give sugary food though, sugar can cause overgrowth of unwanted gut microbes and lead to gas.
It’s very sad that its so difficult to find a rabbit savvy vet.
We’d be very interested in updates. Finger so very crossed for your bun.
