Hi everyone, my female bunny is not feeling her self and is taking medication for her mobility. One thing i noticed after i stopped giving her medication is that she tipped over on one side when she was walking back to her hideyhouse. I have never seen her do this before.

What medication is she on for her mobility?

The combo of reduced mobility and loss of balance sounds like it could be EC. Loss of balance can also be due to ear infection.

She is on Cisapride, metoclopramide, and meloxicam. I took her to the vet on October 7th because her appetite has decreased a lot and they noticed her back molars were a bit too sharp so they trimmed it down. But her appetite still hasn’t gotten to her usual self and now I’ve noticed the tipping even when she shakes her head she tips over.

I am actually at the vet right now.

Yeah, this sounds like more than her simply having issues with getting around. If she falls over while shaking her head, that would suggest something is going on with her ear(s) and it is messing with her equilibrium.

I have a video but idk how to upload it, i tried but then it goes away. Vet checked her ears and didn’t see any infection.

Did they just look in the ear using a scope? They wouldn’t be able to see an inner ear infection. Also, Dana suggested EC, which would also no be visible from looking in the ear.

Yeah just with a scope. I have to wait a week for the EC results.

She said if the results come out negative the next step is a CT scan.

EC tests can be unreliable so you might inquire about treating for EC anyway. Many vets will treat on suspicion without a test result. The treatment is relatively safe and affordable.

She’s pooping and eating hay, but ignores pellets i find that strange.

Just got a text from the vet she tested positive for EC. Is it curable?

EC can be treated successfully with panacur (fenbendazole) or oxibendazole for 28 days. Fenbendazole is the preferred drug, but for buns that don’t do well on it, oxibendazole is another option.

Metacam (meloxicam) helps bring down the tissue inflammation that happens due to the ec.

For vertigo and vertigo-related nausea, some vets prescribe meclizine (an antihistamine).

Treatment doesn’t completely eradicate the ec parasite, so it’s not technically a cure. But it can make the condition manageable and many buns never relapse. It is definitely worth a shot. Panacur is inexpensive and well tolerated by most buns. It can take quite a while before you see improvement though. Meanwhile you should make sure her living area is made up so she cant hurt herself, and you might have to support feed and help her with her personal hygiene.

Thank you for the update! Fingers so very crossed for her!

Yeah, i received Pancur. Pains me to see her lose her balance when she shakes her head. Fingers crossed she will recover.

                                thanks everyone!

There’s not really a cure for EC, but treatment can put it in remission and many bunnies do not relapse. Keep in mind that Panacur has to be given for at least 28 days and improvement will be slow. It doesn’t happen overnight. I agree with Bam that pain medication is important since a lot of symptoms are the result of inflammation.

She was on meloxicam last week when i took her before i knew she has EC. But i didn’t receive anymore just the pancur. And yes on the instructions my vet gave me i have to give it for 30 days once a day.

                                      Panacur**

For ec, Panacur should be given in a dose of 20 mg per kilo bodyweight for 28 days. I think you could ask for some metacam, since it could help. EC causes cell damage and the damaged cells causes the body to respond with inflammation.

Hopefully you’ll see some improvement soon, but it can take weeks. Obviously keep a close eye on appetite and poop.
