Hi everyone. I’m hoping someone can help me out. I have a 7 month old Holland Lop. She’s an only bun, kept indoors in a clean environment. I take care of her like she’s my own child. 3 days ago I noticed the inside of her ears appeared to have a red rash. I keep a check on her ears and fur so this time when I checked it looked a bit red to me. She however did not indicate anything was wrong. She’s acting normal. I freaked out and assumed the worst – mites. I don’t have any experience of mites, and the images I see on Google don’t suggest Lana has mites. I can’t see any scabbing but there is some flakiness on the outer edge which I circled in black. I know I should take her to the vet and trust me I would but I live in a third world country and the vets here can barely treat cats and dogs. If I take Lana to the vet her heart will probably fail when she sees a dog or worse, hears it bark. She will go into SO much stress that I cannot risk that. Even the car journey will be way too much for her. She’s lived a protected life indoors. I’ve tried to speak to the vet though and he suggested revolution. I just want someone’s opinion here. Won’t she lick the medicine? Isn’t it very strong? I’ve heard it can cause renal failure. I’m not even sure if what she has is mites. I’ve consulted some other bunny owners on Instagram and most said it doesn’t look like mites. I’ve also tried to shine the phone torch inside the ear canal and it looks clean, but maybe the redness is a very early sign of mites? What should I do now? Should I risk her life and take her to the vet who may try to treat her with a shot in the dark?

It does look a bit red.

Revolution (selamectin)  is considered rabbit safe, and it is the best antiparastic for treatment of rabbit mites. Rabbits should get the kitten strenght Revolution. It’s a spot-on, which means you apply it on the skin between the rabbit’s shoulderblades. Rabbits can’t reach to lick between their shoulder blades. You can treat with Revolution on suspicion of mites.

What would the correct dosage be for my bunny? She is 7 months and weighs around 820 grams. I know the vet should know but like I said I don’t trust they’ve ever treated rabbits.

It depends on where you live though. In the US, Revolution cannot be purchased over the counter. As Bam said though, it is safe to treat for mites on suspicion. The photos don’t necessarily look like ear mites. The area does look read. If it’s flaking, it could be ringworm or something.

Thank you for your responses. I waited a few days and did nothing and the redness is now gone! However the ears have some flakes.. it’s almost like she got some sort of allergic reaction and now her skin is peeling off a little. Nothing too drastic and it’s not crusty just flakey. I’m attaching some photos of today.

I do have another question. If you shine your phone’s light into the ear canal should you expect to see some ear wax? Because I am seeing some brown wax but I’m not sure if it’s wax or the brown stuff you see when it’s mites? But as it’s an ear and you’re looking deep in it wouldn’t there be some wax?

Earwax tends to be white or yellow-ish. To me, brown would indicate blood or dirt. How brown are we talking here? As for whether there should be earwax… yes, sometimes you’ll see a little bit in there. But bunnies are usually able to clear it out. Sometimes they will get a piece stuck and it will tickle, making them scratch at their ear. Lops tend to have more issues with earwax than other bunnies.

The wax was like chocolate coloured but I checked a few moments later and it was not visible anymore so maybe she cleared it out herself. Right now I can see light yellow coloured wax in both ears which I have seen in her ears before as well and I believe it is normal.

I am concerned about the flakes on her ears though? They are still there and loosely attached inside both ears. They come off easily when I brush them or even just peel them off with my fingers and it doesn’t hurt her. Also I’ve seen a small red dot in one ear. Could it be a scratch from her own nails? Or is this definitely heading towards mites?

Flakes from mites dont come off easily. There will be some dandruff-like flakes if a bun has early stage fur mites, which typically presents first on the rabbit’s back. But both ear mite scabs  and fur mites scabs stick to the skin and it causes the bun pain if you remove them by force.

Both types of mites are highly treatable with Revolution.

Yeah, it seems like something else is going on. The new pictures don’t really look like ringworm either.

Hi, is the pink Revolution box the one appropriate for rabbits? The one that says for puppies and kittens? Each tube containing 0.25ml (15mg) selamectin?

Yes, Revolution (selamectin) for kittens is the Revolution recommended for rabbits.

Hey, when I first got my rabbit he had an ear infection. It could be an ear infection but do make sure you check with ur vet. 🙂
