Technically it’s not an emergency and he is acting fine (Indoor/Outdoor, Extremely healthy, spry, neutered, 6 year old tortoiseshell /Harlequin. Eating, drinking and running around outside right now.) My cat got in his room for a split second and hooked his 3rd eyelid and tore it. A strip of it keeps poking out and it did bleed like 2 drops right when it happened. We’re flushing with saline but there’s not much else we can do at home. I also have pain/anti-inflammatory bunny meds I gave last night and will again tonight (This happened late last night.) I was on the phone with the vets office all day hoping for an opening but they were so swamped they couldn’t even do emergency visits and are closed on the weekend. I live in the middle of no where and all the other vets were closed today do to understaffing. My Vet did look at pictures and said he needs to be seen as soon as possible “incase it goes south” so we’re taking him to another vet tomorrow that’s 2 hours away. I have Neomycin and polymyxin b sulfate and dexamethasone ophthalmic ointment that was for my cats eye a couple moths ago, but they couldn’t say if I can use that tonight.  I saw in a post somewhere else that this was prescribed to their bunny for eye infection. I’m just so worried about my baby boy. Living so far out in the country side is getting so frustrating because the vets here are so understaffed 🙁 . Does anyone have experience with stuff like this? I’m mostly looking for comfort because we ran out of options today and have to wait till tomorrow. Any at home advice for the night to keep him comfy is welcome, and mostly I’m just so worried about my baby boy and can’t think about anything else tonight. I have photos but it wouldn’t let me upload them.

          I’m sorry this happened.

Great that you gave a painkiller! You can put neomycin/polymyxin b/ dexamethazone ointment on a rabbit’s eye, even though rabbits as a species are extra sensitive to corticosteroids. I don’t know how effective ointment would be in your case though.

I’d try to clean the eye with saline eye rinse for humans -just rinse it, then mop up the excess from the cheek. Don’t dab on the eye itself or anything until you’ve seen a vet.

Your bun might need a small operation, but you should never fast a rabbit before anesthesia, so that’s not a worry. It’s good to bring some yummy greens (fragrant herbs are great) for the car ride (since it is rather a long car ride). Even if the bun doesnt want to eat during the ride, the scent of fresh greens can have a calming effect.

I have some experience with this. The treatment was antibiotics and pain meds. Eventually we had to go with steroid eye drops to get the inflammation down because he kept aggravating it. Steroids are generally not used in rabbits, but external ones (drops) are “less bad”. The third eyelid eventually healed, but it was never the same. There was always this piece that protruded. The vet opted not to remove it since it wasn’t causing any problems. When he got older though, I did have to give him artificial tears eye drops occasionally.

Hope by now you were able to have him seen and he is healing! I live in a city and have similar vet problems, it’s gotten a little better but still wish there would be more rabbit vets. It sucks in times when they are sick.
