My 9 year old bun has been dealing with a bad infection that is causing severe swelling in his hind leg. We are looking at amputation now. Anyone have experience with a hind leg amputation? Any tips or helpful items that you used in your rabbit’s recovery?

I don’t have personal experience, but I know that tripod buns usually get around just fine. Sometimes it’s a bit harder with buns that have arthritis. I think the main tips would be making sure you have soft flooring with good traction, plus all the usual things for recovery from surgery (pain management, supportive care such as syringe feeding if needed, etc).

You might find some good info on modifying housing (if needed) here: http://www.disabledrabbits.com/

They even have a section on limb loss: http://www.disabledrabbits.com/limb-loss.html

Yes, they tend to adapt just fine. But I do agree that they can have more trouble with arthritis. Considering his age, this might be a concern. I would definitely look into ways to make things more accessible to him. Jumping up and down from things would be especially hard on the joints.
