I’ve posted before about one of my rabbits respiratory issues and sounds/labored breathing. The vet wants to put ciprofloxacin on his nose, like, tilt his head up and put a drop of it on each nostril. I’ve never heard of this before and scared my rabbit will feel uncomfortable like a drowning feeling. He says it will cure his alleged snuffles (idk if he has snuffles cause he doesn’t have mucus on his nose or weepy eyes except the loud breathing). Please let me know if putting ciprofloxacin in hide nose could help my bunnies breathing, thanks.

This isn’t super common, but yes, you can use antibiotic drops in the nose. It’s usually either Ciprofloxacin or Gentamycin. He probably won’t like it, but it’s just a drop or two. Another option would be to use a nebulizer to deliver the antibiotic.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll ask my vet if nebulizer is an option cause I know for sure my rabbit will hate the drops in the nose. Are nebulizer generally considered safe and sucessful for rabbits with snuffles? Also another question: my rabbit has been using ciprofloxacin for months for his cataract (e cunniculi), is that what is usually done for cataracts/e cunniculi like am I supposed to use it forever on his eye?

Yes, a nebulizer is generally considered safe. There are others on the forum that have used them for their bunnies.

Was he being treated for EC otherwise? What were the antibiotic drops for exactly? Did the vet think he had a secondary infection? Antibiotics aren’t going to do anything for cataracts. There are drops that are used for dogs (Dorzolamide). The drops are used to relieve pressure associated with glaucoma. Severe cataracts can actually lead to glaucoma. I’m not sure if anyone on the forum has had luck with these eye drops for this in rabbits.

Sorry for the very late reply! The ciprofloxacin and ketorlac are for his cataract on his right eye. Now, I wonder why he would prescribe it if it wouldn’t help with it. I will talk to him about it my next appointment. He also thinks my rabbit has sniffles or pasterulla since my rabbit has had weepy eye in the past and sneezes a lot while also having loud breathing sounds.

As for glaucoma in buns, one of our old members (Asriel&Bombur) use latanaprost eyedrops for her ec bun who has cataracts that lead to glaucoma. They do the job, he gets 2 drops twice per day and his pressure is down from 40 to 25 (should ideally be 20).

Ok thanks, I will try asking my vet about it!

Thanks Bam! That’s right, I remember her using latanaprost drops.

My rabbit who had glaucoma, was prescribed Dorzolamide.  It did help with her pressure.
