Hi! I adopted my bun over a year ago, he is 2 years old dwarf (2.3 lbs) and fixed. He’s totally free roam and such a good boy! About 6 months ago, I noticed excess sneezing with a wet sound. He always sneezes a few times while drinking water. Squeaking sounds when he drinks too. When I wipe his nose after drinking, it’s clear and not sticky. Some days it sounds like less congestion, some days more. I would estimate he sneezes ~7 times an hour, then cleans his face, but I don’t see anything on his arms or paws. Little sneezing fits sometimes too. He is doing lots of binkies, flops, and zoomies. He is eating normally (little Mr. Piggy), playing with toys, and even putting on a little more weight as I’ve been giving him a touch more food to help him fight this off. His normal self other than sneezing!

I have taken him to a (highly rated rabbit savy) vet three times since. A few months ago, there was a slightly mucky (very faint green/brown) color, and I brought him back to the vet, but of course no more green by the time we got in. No visible discharge or colored anything since. Panicked that it would eventually get severe and I wouldn’t be able to get an appointment in time, I took home Sulfatrim (enough for 1 ml twice daily for 14 days). No culture was taken. I was instructed to give it if his behavior changes, but it hasn’t. Looking at posts on here, I wonder if I should try to be proactive and give the antibiotic, or just continue monitoring. Could this be simply from having a very flat face? I have a lot of anxiety about this.

7 sneezes per hour isn’t really typical, and while rabbits w/ smooshed faces can have respiratory issues, I personally don’t attribute it to random, chronic sneezing. If the sneezing is generally always associated w/ an action, like eating hay or drinking water, then I’d be more inclined to say it’s normal external irritations. If it’s happening in the absence of anything, I would suspect something going on in the nose.

With antibiotics, you do need to commit going through it for several days and commonly multiple weeks for URIs, if you’re seeing improvement to ensure all the infectious bacteria are gone.

Considering there’s a “wet sound” (assuming outside the context of drinking sneezes?), I would discuss with your vet the pros and cons of simply trying out the antibiotic for at least a week to see if it’s worth continuing or not. There’s also no guarantee that if it is a URI, sulfatrim will be the effective antibiotic for it.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. Yes the wet sound is typical for him except the days he has less congestion it is more regular sounding sneezes. The sneezing happens all the time, but especially during drinking and eating hay. I clean the water bowl with soap once a day, and rinse and refill multiple times a day, and feed Oxbow prime cut hay to try to prevent irritants.

Would you recommend going back to the vet to discuss a plan of action and possibly changing the antibiotic? Also should I ask for a culture to be sure that the treatment will be effective?

I recommend seeking veterinary consultation before starting any treatment. Re: the antibiotic, there would be no point in changing it at this point since it’s never been tried before– I was just mentioning that if you tried it and it didn’t work, it just may not be effective toward the particular strain your rabbit has.

If your vet already allowed you to have the med at home, perhaps you can just schedule a phone call to discuss it rather than setting up an entire visit. Re: doing a culture, that is completely up to you. Some people do cultures, some people do some trial and error.

Yes, chronic sneezing doesn’t happen for no reason. There are some conditions that cause chronic sneezing, like problems with the sinuses and tooth roots. I had a bunny with this problem. But that certainly isn’t the norm. Usually, chronic sneezing is caused by a URI and antibiotics can clear that up. Most vets will simply prescribe a broad-spectrum antibiotic to see if that works. Of course, there is no guarantee that the chosen antibiotic will work against the offending bacteria. So it isn’t unheard of for a vet to simply try a different one. If that doesn’t work, then the vet may opt to try to do a culture. The reason most vets don’t jump right to a culture is because they are not always reliable. Bunnies have tons of bacteria in the sinuses. What grows may not be what is causing the symptoms.
