        [caption id="attachment_1968288" align="alignnone" width="225"]Regular eye^^ Matted eye[/caption]

A few days ago I noticed my bunny had mattered fur under his eye. I tried to wash it off with a warm wash cloth, but it wouldn’t come out, almost like it’s not water soluble. Then today (probably 4 days after the matted fur appeared) he’s been sneezing a lot. He’ll sneeze like 6 times in a row, and has done it 3 or 4 times today and I haven’t even been around him that much.  I’ve never heard him sneeze before today. His behavior seems normal otherwise. Still eating, hoping around, grooming, etc.

I suspect he has some sort of eye infection. I really don’t want to take him to the vet as I can’t afford it, and we are probably going to need to get rid of him soon anyways. I’m having a baby in 5 weeks and I’m not sure I can handle a newborn and a bunny. Does anyone have any guesses as to exactly what’s wrong and do you  have any over the counter or at home remedies I can try? I included a picture of the normal side, and two of the bad side.

Im sorry you are going through this.

Id urge you to reach out to rescues and no-kill shelters asap, because after Easter, they’ll be at capacity due to abandonned gifted “Easter” buns.

Theres no shame in surrendering a rabbit.  Rabbits are fragile and high maintenance.

Rabbits can get bacterial “colds”. The snot contains complex carbohydrates that act pretty much like glue. That’s the reason why the snot is difficult to dissolve with plain  water. Bacterial colds need treatment with antibiotics, not rarely for several weeks.

Wed be interested in how you fare, but please dont feel any pressure. We dont judge and we dont allow judgemental comments. The fact that you post here means you’re good, caring people.

Unfortunately, there are no at-home remedies that could be recommended since there is no way to diagnose what’s going on (and generally rabbit ailments cannot be treated w/ OTC medications). The symptoms you are seeing can have multiple causes, such as dental and bacterial– all of which require proper diagnosis to ensure the correct and safe treatment. If you are having difficulty with financial assistance, there are some resources here (see financial assistance section(: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Choosing_a_rabbit_veterinarian

While rehoming can be a difficult decision to make, it can be the best decision in situations. There are ways to ensure best care though, including contacting a rabbit rescue specifically. You can find some guidance here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Rehoming_your_rabbit

As the others said, there are a number of things that could cause this. It could be a URI, a dental problem, a blocked tear duct, etc. Each ailment would require a different treatment. He needs to be properly diagnosed by a vet so he can have the correct treatment.

He looks like a very sweet bunny. I’m sure you have a bond with him. It would be a shame for you to have to give him up. If you have to though, please be sure to take him to a no-kill shelter. Or if you rehome him online, make sure to interview the person and charge an adoption fee. Too many people out there looking for “free” rabbits that they can use as snake food.
