French angora/Holland lop kits would most likely look extremely adorable. So that’s not a problem. Rabbits are however born furless and open their eyes after like 10-14 days, so they wont pop out fuzzy and loppy (the ears dont lop until later, if they lop).
Dont trust a diaper to stop Gretchen’s sexual urges. It only takes a second for buns to mate. Keep him and your Holland bun separate and keep in mind rabbits can mate through cage bars. A boy bun can have viable sperm for 4-5 weeks after neuter, so that’s how long he’ll be capable of impregnating any intact female.
I dont quite understand how many buns you have in your home now. Are there more than Gretchen and your Holland lop?
maybe baby is my holland lop, she is a baby 5 month old and hopefully be spayed on the 6 of jan. with my vet. I foolishly agreed to foster these angora bunnies until theyre spay date. i’v only adopted 3 bunnies in my time. the others were about 4-6 years old in a span of 20 years. i;m a persian cat person so my maybe baby was an impulse adopt. the workers at the humane society really didnt know what was going on when i told them that the bonded females had pretty sizable testicles. i did hear that they could get pregnant through the bars. my bunny is litter trained 80 percent of the time. she is doing territorial turds now. getting pregnant through a diaper has to take some talent. i’m curious as to how? i’m just anxious and called the vet.. of course I cant get her in for a sonogram and an emergency spay until way after the holidays, of course the kids joke about her “accidentally falling down the basement stairs”
I know only have two…maybe baby and gretchen that I now call glenn coco, regina is back up at the humane society with a jacked up eye
I dont think he could mate through the diaper, I meant he could perhaps remove the diaper himself and go for it 🙂
I was only wondering if you perhaps had many buns, because that would be a more difficult situation, housing-wise. If there were many rabbits you could need help from the humane society. With 2 rabbits, the situation seems manageable.
Young rabbits are notoriously difficult to sex, even vets get it wrong sometimes.
Oh my, this isn’t a good situation. I’m sorry you are having to deal with this. Babies can be difficult to sex correctly. If someone looked at them when they were really young, declared them girls, and didn’t reevaluate once they got a little older then I can see how the shelter could have mistakenly told you they were all girls. After all, testicles do not become visible until they start reaching puberty. This can be as early as 12 weeks, but can be much later than that (even if they are starting to show signs of becoming hormonal).
Bam gave you some good advice. Keeping them separated at all times will ensure mating doesn’t occur again. You don’t know if your bunny is pregnant at this point or not. Your options are emergency spay or wait and see if babies appear. As for what the potential babies would look like, I wouldn’t worry too much. There is this little thing called a fuzzy Holland. The wool gene was actually intentionally introduced into Holland lops in an attempt to keep the rollback coat in certain colors. The side effect of this was fuzzy Hollands (babies with two copies of the wool gene). So the babies from a Holland x Angora cross may have regular fur, mid length fur, or fuzzy fur (depending on what genes your Holland has). As for the ears… probably helicopter. Soooooo cute! The humane society would have no problem rehoming, I’m sure.
BUT… let’s hope she isn’t pregnant.
gretchen was 4-5 months when i started fostering. No, this dude had big balls. both of the fosters did. When I pulled them apart from each other and checked the damages, I clearly could tell they were boys and I am not a bunny person. I do admit I was confused about the anatomy. Things were hanging opposite direction. and they have this weird long fleshy skin thing. Can you tell I don’t do bunnies. I have been a persian cat enthusiast for 30 years. I don’t breed them, just show and collect retires. My “maybe baby” is a broken torte and all adorable, she has a ‘tude and looks down on me. I can tell. gretchen is mostly all cream but has chalky grey ear tips. Sweet little guy.
The only time I let him out of his play yard is when I know maybe baby is hanging out on the bed upstairs. `She has those “come hither” eyes and she will sleep next to the play yard leaving poops around it….cant wait to get her fixed on the 6th, The really adorable thing is that he adores her. she grooms him and he will just flatten out. I really need to see him IN a good home.
so fingers crossed for no long head loppy, gangly monstrosities.. little and cute find homes
Hey thanks for all the help. also my typing and grammar are lacking due to my german keyboard. it’s just to hard to find all the special characters let alone the alphabet.
Haha, bunny testicles do have a special look! People can be frightened at the first glimpse of them, especially if they (like you) were told they had a girl bun. I remember one instance when the bun owner feared her young female bun had developed some sort of tumors 😦 They weren’t tumors 😃
If your bun isnt pregnant and you get both buns fixed, maybe they could make a beautiful bonded couple? You typically wait 4 weeks after the castrations to try and bond two buns. We have a bonding-section in case you’d be interested.
As LBJ says, the combination French angora/Holland lop could result in some fuzzy lops (I dont know the statistical likelihood, but the American fuzzy lop originates from such a combo), but even if you were to get smooth-haired non-lops, I’m confident they’d be adorable. Most pet rabbits and shelter rabbits are “mongrels”. Since you agreed to foster the angoras under the premise that they were girls, I think the Humane Society would help you find good homes for the kits -IF there will be kits.
Yes, fingers crossed that no kits pop out because what if my cats think they were snacks. They hang with my pigs with no problems. But they are predictors or supposed to be. I I’m just gonna stop thinking about it.
I dont think you need to think about it much for now. You have a vet appt on Jan 6, you don’t need to do anything differently until then.
A pregnant doe will want to eat a bit more, but rabbits as a rule always want to eat a bit more than we give them, so that’s not a sure sign. The doe might stop eating when the birth is drawing near. Normal gestation period is +- 32 days. She won’t nest until the very last days of her pregnancy. It’s advisable to provide her with some nesting material around that time. She’ll pull fur from her chest, which is ok, the hormones make the hair come loose so it isnt painful when she pulls fur. She’ll use it to wrap up the naked kits so they keep warm.
Contrary to cats and dogs, the rabbit mum wont “lay” with her kits. In nature, the kits will be in a separate burrow, and the mum only visits once or twice per 24 hours for a quick feeding. Rabbit milk is extremely fat, so the kits get a lot of nourishment from these quick feedings.
Keep in mind though, false pregnancies are common in intact rabbits. Rabbits (just like llamas, fun random fact) are induced ovulators, meaning ovulation can occur spontaneously upon encountering a male even at a distance. Once ovulation is a fact, the rabbit body will go through the exact same “hormonal storm” as an actually pregnant doe, complete with nesting and fur-pulling. There wont be any kits of course, and the symptoms always resolve spontaneously after the “non-birth”.
We’d be very happy for updates!
My “maybe baby” had her babies, under a pillow on my sofa. I was sad for her. She is just a baby herself. 7 healthy babies that are my responsibility in a house full of Persian cats. They are safe in a Moses basket inside a huge dog cage. Momma bunny does not really care for the mother role because I need to put her in that cage at night to care for her chunky mini hippos. They are a little over a week old and now have fur. It’s quite amazing how they change every day. I’m cannot wait until I can cuddle them. My Effie Trinket is dying to mother them. She has been sitting on the Guinea pigs preparing.
Well done of you to help her! It is unfortunately very common for very young first-time bun mums to not quite grasp the concept of mothering. Very often the kits dont survive because of this. If that should happen, know that you are in no way to blame, it is truly difficult to rear baby buns. It sounds very wise to keep the nest in a dog crate, an all too common COD in baby buns is that they (blindly) wander off from the nest and succumb to hypothermia.
Will you be getting any help from the rescue when the time comes to find new homes for the little ones?
Mom buns only feed the babies a couple times a day, so it is quite normal to not see her spend a lot of time with them. If you check the babies bellies you can see if they are being fed.
I’m not an expert, but I think it’s also OK (and even recommended) to handle the babies daily to help them get used to human touch and to make sure they are all healthy. 🙂
It’s so sad when this happens but I’m sure they are soooo cute!

Hope to see pics of the babies!
As much as I would too, the forum rules are that you can only post baby pics if you are keeping the babies, so unfortunately I don’t know if this would qualify since it’s a foster situation!

My “maybe baby” is a grumpy mama. She does not want to feed them, I am doing an additional feeding with kmr to keep their tummies full. They babies started opening their eyes yesterday. They scoot all over, testing their mini hoppers. I love seeing their ears pop up when I talk to them. Thank you all so much. I will continue to keep updating. Now I’m off to root through the other posts.
Aww little guys! It’s common for new moms to not be great at carrying for them, they are lucky to have you!

Now I need to ask this. Why? Why do the pee on my bed? I was all excited that my little gray and white bun was coming to see me. He just paused on my hip and peed. This bunny has rocks for brains so I’m not thinking he’s claiming anything, but his mom does it also. She waits until she’s just out of reach and then gives me the side eye. Sometimes I do force cuddles, so at times it’s warranted. Other times I share my night time snack tans and she still will do it. I’m now at the point where I’m anxious and tense when she’s up here. I need a bunny and cat whisperer. One of my older Persians gets bent out of shape and cries if a small critter touches him. He’s been like that for. years. Also, they eat a lot of cardboard, they all enjoy it immensely. Should I be concerned?
Rabbits do like to pee on the ones they love. In the rabbit universe, its a compliment. It tends to subside with spaying/neutering, but intact rabbits can be quite determined when it comes to peeing on their human. Rabbits also like to pee on soft things like beds and sofas, and that often goes for both intact and spay/neutered rabbits.
It’s very good that the little ones want to hang out with you, but I think you want to block them from accessing your bed. It gets really tedious to have to change you bed linen all the time 😖
As for the cat, I think its best if you can keep the buns away from him. Rabbits are curious, esp baby rabbits, they want to explore everything. They’re pretty much totally clueless at this young age, so they’re unlikely to understand any signals your cat is giving off.
Cardboard is ok to an extent, but huge quantities of it can cause GI trouble and blockages. Hay is a huge lot better, twigs are good too. You want to make sure that any twigs you give are not treated with pesticides. Willow is as a rule not treated with pesticides, willow is naturally resistant to pests. I recently got a whole bunch of willow from someone who was pruning their willows, my rabbits are having a lot of fun gnawing and eating the bark off the twigs.
