Both me and my Son had to work today,  so came home and couldn’t find Miu for a bit. She was all hunched up and not taking treats so gave her simethecone (3 doses now). Not sure how long she was like that but she did eat lunch, so no more than 4 hours. Now almost 3hrs after I found her and not really any improvement.  Unfortunately don’t have a bunny savvy emergency vet nearby, so trying to help her. She does have metcam which I haven’t given her yet. Honestly a bit nervous.  I think I have no choice at this point though. I have been giving her gentle tummy massages and trying to get her to move a bit. She doesn’t want to.

Anyway,  if anything else I can do to help her let me know.

Just gave her the metcam, letting her hide in her box for a bit as don’t want to stress her out too much. How long does it usually take to have an affect?

I ended up calling the only emergency vet that specializes in exotic pets, the were so backed up the said they would call me if they ended up with an opening. They did, and said I could bring her in around midnight. Well as soon as I went and got car ready and was about to put her in her carrier she started perking up. I gave her a small  syringe of peppermint tea and she actually drank it all up and took a couple pellets. After a bit she ate some hay. We ended up canceling the vet visit as it would have been a long drive and also they told us she may be there for several hours before even being seen. It just seemed a higher risk, especially since Dorian couldn’t go with her. Hoping I made right choice.  Going to keep an eye on her for while longer and then let her just rest.

Seriously so scary how fragile they are in these cases.

I’m glad she perked up! This could’ve been an uncomplicated bout of gas.

So glad she perked up! Nothing like threatening with a trip to the vet to get a bun to snap out of it! LOL  I literally tell my buns, “if you don’t start eating we are going to the vet!” and it’s weird how often it works haha

In seriousness, I like to give a bit of fluids along with simethicone at the first signs of issues, because slight gut slow downs can be caused by (or at least made worse by) dehydration as well. Even if a blockage is suspected, giving a small amount of fluids is unlikely to harm, so giving the peppermint tea was a good move!

I had tried to give her some fluids earlier too but she was mostly just letting things dribble out of her mouth, she did seem to like the tea a lot better. Poor little girl was so lifeless, I actually thought I had lost her at one point. I ended up just scooping her up and cuddling her with a hot water bottle on the couch, she seemed to like that after the initial not liking being picked up as her breathing and shivering calmed down and she snuggled deeper. I am thinking that may have helped… and of course the site of the carrier! Today she is bouncing about which is the best thing to see.

And just a short vent at all the Emergency Clinics I called who refused to see her because she was a rabbit. I really feel like emergency vets should at least have emergency training for more than just cats and dogs. Rabbits are not that rare of pets. Some were nice about it but one woman was really rude. The Exotic care place was great, but the fact they were so backlogged shows there is demand.

I totally feel your frustration about there not being a rabbit ER vet! I had that issue when I lived in CA. And warming up a cold bun can really help! Bun Jovi almost died of stasis a few years ago and warming him up really helped keep him alive until we could get to the vet. You might also try hay tea with your buns, it was the only thing Bun would drink in that time.

Also FYI, recently I’ve been using Emeraid (herbivore sustain) instead of critical care and my buns LOVE it so much. Bun Jovi always hated critical care but he loves Emeraid (all 4 of my buns love it, which is saying something!). They get excited about it like a treat, so in the unfortunate event that one gets sick I hope they might eat some willingly.

Since you commonly deal with tummy issues with your buns and you don’t have access to an ER vet, you might ask your normal vet if they can prescribe sub-q fluids for you to keep on hand as part of your first aid kit (and show you how to give them). They are very handy for cases like this and generally are safe to give (and usually easier than syringing anything.

Emeraid has very high bio-availability and is thus better for buns in acute circumstances. It’s like pre-digested food. If we’d have it here Id opt for that over CC for emergencies. CC will do very well for long-term maintenance supplement feeding (like I had to do with my Vilde).

Sub q fluids would really be great to have on hand for these type of emergencies. It’s amazing what a difference sub q fluids can make.

Im having the same problem here with ER vets. Most wont see rabbits unless they get a last minute cancellation. Here you can insure a dog or cat for up to the equivalent of 14000 dollars, but the maximum amount for a rabbit is just 2000. So ER vets obviously prioritize dogs and cats.

FYI there are two formulas for Emeraid. One is the acute, immediate recovery formula, recommended for buns after surgery.  The one I feed Bun Jovi called “Sustain” and is recommended for longer term supplemental feeding. I think they are both good but I haven’t tried the other formula!

Thanks! I will look into getting emeraid. I will ask vet about the sub q fluids too. I also want to get a stethoscope as trying to hear their heart and digestion helps and is awkward just laying my ear against them. I wish they weren’t both such delicate little fluffs. At least this time it was isolated, sometimes if one gets it the other will a day later.
