Hey everyone! I have a problem with my bunny refusing to drink water that contains medicine. It’s a liquid that  must be mixed with water 25ml / 1l. Since he drinks A LOT, like 2l per day (i know it’s not normal), I can’t just use syringe to give it to him, he can’t drink anything else besides that for 3 days straight, but it’s impossible.

Do you know about something that may help him drink it? I would really appreciate any help! We are desperate now

Hmm, that is an unusual delivery method… what medication is it and what is it treating for?

You can try mixing a little apple juice into it to see if that helps?

It’s for coccidiosis which we’ve been dealing with ever since i got him and this is actually the last type of medicine i can get here, the other one wasn’t very effective. It’s Sulfacox.

Sadly I can’t add anything that contains sugar as he is on a strict diet and can’t eat any fruit or veggies, even the pellets are very limited. I asked our vet about it but he said no

The best treatment I’m aware of for coccidea is ponazuril, have you asked your vet about that one?

I’m not familiar with Sulfacox. A quick Google search says it’s a treatment for poultry. No wonder. I agree with Dana that this is an unusual delivery system for medication when it comes to bunnies.

Thank you both for the replies! From what I searched, ponazuril can’t be bought here and I couldn’t find where to try order it from, so I will ask my vet about it. Here usually Sulfacox or Salicox is used when it comes to coccidia, beside my vet, two of my teachers are vets so I often consult with them, too, and they confirmed it. It’s written on the package that it’s for bunnies, too, so I’m not worried about that.

Most of the time bunnies don’t have problem with drinking it but mine is being too picky with what he drinks. However he didn’t have any problems with drinking Salicox, which is powder dissolved in water.

I’m going to ask my teachers tomorrow, too, and ask about ponazuril! Hopefully I can find a solution soon, thank you!

I guess I’m just surprised at the volume that needs to be drank… 1 L of medicine is a lot!
