        Hi everyone! I need some advice! Three bunnies were dumped at my school patio. They are for sure pets. They have numbers on their ears. We are trying to find a home for them but in the meantime we want to keep them safe. Their nails are very long and a teacher hit scratched! We are taking them to the vet. What is the best place to post for adoptions? We are in Houston. I’ve already tried many shelters but just asking because maybe I missed one :(. Also, what is the best way to keep them. We have them in a doggy fence but we need something easy to clean so the kids can help. Thank you!

          Thank you for taking these rabbits in!

          The first thing to do is to try and sex them. There are good resources online with pics. Here is one video, from a trusted source;

          Omce youve separated males and females you’ve bought yourselves a lot of time. You obviously don’t want them to procreate, so  sexing is important. It’s good if you can separate them so that they can still hear and smell each other, but they must be kept so they cant reach to mate across cage bars.

          You should feed them ad lib grass hay and water. They’ll benefit from 1-2 tablespoons/day of good quality rabbit pellets too -f ex Oxbow, Sherwood or Science Selective.

          Its not very difficult to clip bun nails, if you are 2 people. One person holds the bun in their lap, the other person does the clipping. For each foot you can give a yummy treat such as a sunflower seed. Styptic powder is good to have on hand in case you accidentally cut into the quick.

          We’d love to hear more about these buns!

            This is very sad. Numbers in the ears means they may have been abandoned 4-H projects or other breeding rejects. 🙁

            I agree you should separate them to make sure you don’t end up with accidental litters. A puppy pen is a great temporary set up, you can put pee pads on the floor to make clean up easier and provide a litter box filled with hay in the corner they toilet in the most (you can add a layer of litter, such as pine pellets, in the litter box as well, but don’t use pine shavings). They should get unlimited hay (any grass hay such as timothy is great) and water. Don’t feed any salads, fruits, veggies for now because it could shock their systems. I found in the Houston area these two rabbit rescue orgs:

            I recommend getting in touch with them! They may even be able to help set you up as a foster (if you are interested) while they help find adopters.
