My bun recently broke one toe from his hind leg and I took him to the vet to get Xrays done but the doctor told me he would need surgery to either repair or amputate the toe. Apparently the cost would be $5k for amputation, however I don’t have the money as of now. Is there anything else I could do for the toe, at least in the meanwhile? They didn’t put a cast on or give me much information other than he needs surgery. So far my bun seems fine, he eats and drink water and even has binkies and gets grumpy when I dont let him run around. What should I do?

It depends on where the toe was broken and what other damage was done in the process of the toe breaking. Is the toe still pretty much in place? Or is it sticking out funny?

My Wick broke his toe and after a lot of X-rays and follow up over several months with an exotic veterinary team (very rabbit savvy), it seemed unnecessary to amputate his toe. Yes it healed crooked and impacts his walk slightly now, but it is very livable.

Every case has different factors, so I’d explore with the vet if amputation/surgery is actually necessary for any reason. What are the concerns about letting it heal with monitoring?

Oh really? Did your bun have any cast on at all or did you simply let it heal on it’s own like that?

Not the same situation but my bunny managed to heal from a broken jaw without surgery. Luckily the two of the three breaks were in places the vet said the muscles would keep in place based on the CT scan. Surgery was an option but we opted not to do it because we thought he’d have a better chance of surviving by healing on his own. We just made sure to feed him critical care, pain medicine, antibiotics and monitor him with regular vet checkups. He’s since made a full recovery.

                Hope your bunny gets better!
