We will be taking Charlie into Tampa on Thursday to receive her first dose of the RHDV2 vaccine. This is the closest location to us that is offering the vaccine. It will be an hours drive there and another hour back not counting the time we will be at the vets office. Charlie has only spent very short times in a car infrequently when visiting our local vet. So this will be quite a stressful time for her.

We would really appreciate any advice of how to make this time less stressful for her. I’ve got her carrier out so she can go in and out as she pleases for now. I’ve walked with her in it around the house some. I thought about taking her out to the car and doing a few short drives, but hate to take her outside unvaccinated right now.

I think  I have some Bach Flower remedy for cats. What do you think about rubbing a drop or two on her ear before we travel? I did this once for another bunny who was terrified of fireworks. I’m concerned the stress may cause GI stasis and see have had URI issues in the past.

Also, should I line the bottom of her carrier with some hay? Seems like a long time for her to not go potty and don’t want her sitting in pee if she goes.

First, don’t worry! I had to drive my 4 buns almost 3 hours each way to the vet for their vaccines and they all did great.

I line the carriers with a pee pad or a towel and a layer of nice fluffy hay on top. I also brought a baggie of some favorite fresh greens. When we got to the vet the vaccine itself was very fast, so I actually waited with them in the waiting room for about 30 min just to give them a break from the driving. I also offered them some greens during that period. Some of them ate some, some didn’t, but I wasn’t too worried about it.  In your case I wouldn’t worry if she won’t eat at the vet’s, especially since your total trip time will be under 6 hours (probably closer to 2 or 3).

When you get home, just let her chill in the carrier for a few minutes, and then put her back in her home turf and let her rest. You can offer some freshly rinsed salad then too. If she doesn’t want to eat by dinner time, you should syringe feed her. Sometimes with a stressful event buns just need a syringe feeding to help them get rehydrated and perk them back up.

Most buns do fine with car rides, especially free-way driving. They don’t love it, but after a bit they settle and rest in the car.
