Hi everybody. I need some help. So I know that rabbits can mess up their fur with urine, but Mrvica(that’s my rabbit’s name) was completely clean 3 days ago and she’s cleaning herself multiple times a day like every rabbit. Today I’ve noticed that her fur is soaked in urine and she smells bad. I’m cleaning her toilet on a daily basis and she’s a free roaming bunny so she sits in her toilet only while eating. I’ve tried to clean her with wet towels and baby wet wipes but it doesn’t come off. I literally don’t understand how she suddenly got this dirty. Can you give me some cleaning tips?

Here is some guidance of various rabbit-safe ways to “bathe” a rabbit: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Bathing_rabbits

Of note, I don’t think rabbits should be getting significant urine staining on their fur, if their health/mobility is fine, and if the litterbox set-up is proper. Generally, the paws and bum will stay very clean, so if the environment and litterbox are ideal/clean, but your rabbit is now consistently getting dirty, I would have her assessed by a vet. It could be something health-wise is causing her to soil herself and/or inhibiting her ability to properly groom herself.

I agree that it sounds like there could be a medical issue that’s causing her to get urine on her, such as a UTI.

Staining will go away in time, the main thing is to make sure her skin isn’t in contact with wet urine as this can cause scalding.

She may benefit from a”sanitary shave” that the vet can help with.

Her health and mobility are fine, I took her to the vet a month ago everything is okay. She tried to clean her bottom but the fur is already stained and the urine has dried so I need to help her. Good thing the urine isn’t in touch with her skin, only the fur is dirty. I’ve tried cleaning her with some soap and wet washcloth and the smell has gone a little. I bought cornstarch baby powder today and I’m going to try to give her a dry bath hopefully it will get the work done.

If they are just stains then I wouldn’t worry about it, and the stains themselves can be very hard or impossible to remove safely. It will go away as she sheds her old fur as long as her environment is kept clean.
