        Hello.

Last night my bunny was playing in his tunnel, but I noticed it was crinklier than normal. When I went to check out why, I discovered he’d gotten between the liner and the crinkly plastic inside and had been chewing on it. Some plastic pieces fell out when I picked up the tunnel. It all got thrown away immediately.

Bunny was fine last night. Ate his pellets before I went to bed, and again when I woke up. I brought him his dinner time greens and he won’t touch them. He also won’t touch pellets or even watermelon.

He’s mostly sticking to his cage but he did come out and do a quick lap once or twice. Was moving fine. He’s even still pooping and the poop is normal. But his stomach is clearly hurting him.

I’ve always had a ton of luck with Simethicone and Critical Care, but both I have on hand are expired. Simethicone expired Feb of this year and Critical Care expired April this year.
Can I give these anyways? I can’t get any Critical Care quickly but I can run out and get Simethicone in the morning…at least as long as any are open.

        Thank you in advance.

I would give both the simethicone and the Critical Care. They expired recently.

Fingers so crossed he’ll snap out of it with simethicone and CC. It’s great that he’s moving around, that’s really good for the proper function of the GI tract.

Since you suspect he ate some foreign material I would take him to the vet right away if he doesn’t respond to the critical care and simethicone quickly.

Thank you all for the information. I made a snap judgment with my gut last night and gave him both.

He’s doing much, much better! He’s pooping plenty, he ate greens, he’s eaten hay. He no longer looks like he’s in pain, either. I had to stay with him 11 hours straight, but it was worth it.

Out of curiosity, when this happens, is it GI Statis, or is that something different? My bunnies have been through this a few times each, and CC and Simethicone administered within the first few hours always gives them a very fast turn around.

                Yay! 😃

GI stasis actually means that the intestinal movement has stopped. The term is used  loosely to describe any kind of gut slowdown that results in discomfort. The discomfort often comes from gas, which in turn tends to be caused by the slowdown. It’s quite common, especially when a rabbit is molting. Stress can cause it, rapid shifts in the diet can cause it, very often we dont get to know what caused it.  When the gas lets up (i e the rabbit farts), things are good again. It’s similar to colic in horses.

If these episodes happen frequently and especially if they dont resolve with simethicone and CC, it’s important to try and find a root cause. Pretty much all more serious (or less serious) rabbit ailments first present as GI distress.

Bunbun has made a full recovery!

I wouldn’t say they happen frequently, but it’s happened enough that I’m able to deal with it quickly, and thankfully the CC and Simethicone work like a charm every time. 😀
Thanks again to everyone for the advice and information. 🙂

I have a feeling that in this case, it was either Bunbun swallowing a little of that plastic (hopefully not!) or possibly the little bit of watermelon I gave him disagreed with him. No more watermelon to be on the safe side.
