Hi everyone! I was wondering if it’s dangerous to wear scented lotion/perfume around my rabbit. I never spray any products in the room that my rabbit is in, but I use scented products (shampoo, body wash, perfume, lotion, hair products, etc.) in my bathroom next door and then interact with my rabbit after. I always wash my hands prior to petting him or touching his hay/treats to make sure I don’t have any residual product on my hands, but will it harm him if I am in the room with him while I’m wearing scented products? If so, would this just cause mild nasal irritation or could this cause something very dangerous like pneumonia? Thanks in advance!

Essential oils and scent diffusers are consider dangerous/toxic. I wouldn’t consider body wash/soaps to be a problem because as you said, you apply them and then are rinsing them off. I probably wouldn’t apply perfume right before interaction, and I wouldn’t let them lick an area where perfume was applied or recently applied hand lotion etc.

Scented things like soaps, lotions, and even most perfumes are not going to cause an issue. I mean, your bunny may not like the way you smell… but that’s a different kind of issue. The only thing to be really worried about is essential oils. And even then, it’s long-term exposure that causes the problem.
