When I first got MaxMax now

I am new to this rabbit forum and this is my first post. As such I would like to introduce my rabbit. My rabbit is a flemish mix (I forgot the other breed he is as well). I got Max from a breeder around July 2021, making him around 12 months. We got him from a local breeder who was super sweet and bred her last fluffle. Unfortunately, he is not neutered, although I am planning to neuter him soon. I’m going to be totally transparent. When I first got him I spent a lot of time with him, but for months I felt as if I neglected him by not spending time with him or letting him out of his cage. For the last week, I’ve been letting him out of his cage, which is an xl dog kennel, for a few hours a day and I have seen dramatic improvements in his mood. My question is, since I have been free-roaming him starting today in a room, I am litter training him. He has picked up on it immediately to the point where he only pees and poops in his litter box. Is it possible that he has learned to use the litter box immediately?

I had a bun that littertrained himself instantly. He was 5-6 months old ca. He was being quarantined for 2 weeks in a big outdoors hutch/run. I noticed he peed and pooped in one corner of the run, so I put a litterbox there and put some of his pee and poop in it. He immediately took to using the box and he kept using it when I moved him inside.

One annoying thing he did though, when his hormones “struck”, was that he peed high up on the wall (several feet high) behind the litter box. Neutering put a swift stop to the wall pee-spraying.

When he got older, he took to sleeping at the foot end of my bed at night. He never even once peed on my bed.

It’s great and is also subject to change as hormones may kick in and as he becomes more comfortable in the bigger space.

I too have a rabbit who was confined to a small area for a while in her past home and she also is very good with the litterbox. Restriction is a part of litterbox training (though not to the high degree that we see in neglect/misinformed owner cases). Overtime though, as a rabbit becomes more comfortable with having more space, they may come upon other places where they also would like a litterbox to be.

As Wick says, your bun could lose some of his good litterbox habits over time. Their natural inclination to use a litterbox has evolved as a protective measure. As your bun familiarised himself with your house, he might feel its safe to poop and pee pretty much anywhere.

It’d be a good idea to get Max neutered. And he chooses an additional toilet spot, you can place an additional litterbox in that spot. Rabbits do like to choose their spot themselves.

My Yohio (the bun I wrote about in my first post) had two litterboxes once he was moved indoors, one in the hall and one in the bedroom.

Coincidentally, Yohio too was a Japanese harlequin, just like your bun.
