Is anybody else having problems with Oxbow essentials adult rabbit pellets ? Lately, I have found pieces of clay and sand in the bags. I have used this brand for many years; and I can’t say that I have had any real issues with it. Now, when I try to feed my little buns, they go and smell it and then turn up their noses at it. They refuse to eat it until they are extremely hungry.
When I squish their poop between my fingers, at first they are very hard, after they have broken down, they turn to a fine paper/cardboard-like substance, and it breaks down into a powder. The bunnies poop has also become very hard, until it has had a chance to start breaking down.
Since this problem with the pellets began, I have lost one bunny. I don’t know if it’s related, it’s quite coincidental though.
Also, I noticed that molasses is in the ingredients. I have looked online and have read in several places that molasses should never be given to rabbits. So, why do they put it in the pellets?

I’m not sure if molasses is a binder or a sweetener for taste but it seems to be quite common in pelleted food rabbits and similar animals. I don’t think all of the oxbow pellets have molasses in them, I normally feed the Oxbow Garden Select and they don’t contain molasses. I’ve recently just had to switch back to Oxbow Essentials because I couldn’t get the Garden Select when I needed it, but I haven’t had any issues with pieces of debris in the bag. I would consider contacting either the company you purchased from or Oxbow themselves about getting a refund or replacement bag.

Molasses isn’t listed as an ingredient on my bag, I would have avoided it if it were Also no issues like you described, though it takes me a while to go through a bag so this isan older batch. Where did you get your bag? I hope you didn’t get a cheap knock off, Amazon has that issue with lots of products unfortunately.

I haven’t ever found foreign objects in Oxbow pellets. I would contact them. I’m sure they will replace the bag.

They talk about molasses in their blog, if that helps at all: https://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/blog/cane-molasses-why-is-it-in-my-pets-food/
