Hello. Just wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions . I have a 12 year old rabbit (coco) who has arthritis. He has been on metacam for about a year and a half 0.2  Recently he has needed more and we are now using the maximum of 0.7 for his weight once or twice a day.

Last weekend he started crunching his teeth. He was given his meds. Seemed to have little or no effect. I took him to the vet the next morning where he was given pain relief by injection. The vet said he had spurs beginning on his teeth and she wondered if this was also causing pain. He had also stopped eating so was given a gut stimulant.

She asked to see him the next day . Still not eating on his own (syringe feeding) she said he had lost weight (previously weighed 6 weeks before) He received more pain relief by injection. She suggested removing the spurs and thought it was possible there might be some she couldn’t see.

In the next day he didn’t settle or eat and I decided to go ahead with the dental treatment which he had yesterday.

Again back today for a check. But he hadn’t had metacam and when I returned from work my son said he was very stiff. I heard a few teeth crunches. I gave him metacam and took him to the vet. I asked for an injection. She said she didn’t want to give too much as it might make him sleepy but gave him a minimum dose.

Tonight he is (ok) eating a little, though not a lot. I’ve heard the odd tooth crunch but not constant.

I asked for stronger pain relief in case he needed it over the weekend and she said they were going to get advice about possible meds. Some people use gabapentin . But again just said if he isn’t ok in the morning he could go in again for a check. They are only open in the morning.

Im worried he will look ok then later tomorrow will be in pain again.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance

Hey! Sorry to hear your going through this.

My last rescue bunny suffered bad arthritis, so bad she couldn’t walk properly.

He could be a little low/sore from the surgery.

Has the vet definitely checked for arthritis to make sure its not a different issue, that would be my first thought as adding more pain meds could mask any other issue that could be causing the teeth grinding

Just for reference my bunny used to get 0.36 ml of meloxicom 10mg for dogs a day and she was a small lionhead weighing just 1.5 kg and that was prescribed byna rabbit vet – so maybe do see if they can perscribe a stronger pain if you are confident your bunnies pain is from the arthritis.

Lastly, just be sure your vet is a rabbut savvy bet so your bun is getting the best treatment, if possible, they generally give more accurate advice in comparison to regular vets.

          Good luck

            Poor bun 🙁

I’ve been prescribed gabapentin for my buns before, it does tend to make them sleepy. I think at his age, it would be good to make sure there isn’t something else going on. It’s good the teeth were looked at, it could just be that he’s still recovering from his dental.

I would keep up the supportive care (fluids, syringe feeding) and see if he improves with a bit more time after his dental.

Also, with long term metacam, it’s good to give along with famotidine to help protect the stomach.

              Thanks for your replies

He is ok at the moment (eating ) in metacam twice a day. Still unsteady on the back legs at times.

My other bunny came out in sympathy and looked ill. She was eating the extra food for him and had those big smelly poops. Syringe fed (stopped the treats) keeping an eye on her too. Just about to cut her nails which is always a nightmare
