Hey I was wondering how many people actually vaccinate there rabbits for rabbit hemorrhagic disease and should I do it?

I’m in Australia where the disease has been for a very long time as well as vaccination (for some of the strains). I vaccinate my pair every year (the current recommendation is I believe for every 6 months with the Cylap vaccine in Australia but yearly is enough for me). As my pair get older if I start to see a negative reaction to the vaccine I may skip it the following year, but so far I’ve not had an issue. I’ve had my current pair for almost 6 years, vaxed every year. My previous buns were also vaxed yearly.

If RHDV is in your area or state, then yes I would definitely recommend vaccinating against it. Rabbits don’t survive it if they catch it.

I’m in the south of Sweden and I’ve vaccinated my rabbits yearly. It’s an absolute must here, we have both RVHD and myxomatosis in the wild rabbit population. There have been several different vaccines over the years. The European vaccines are not the same as the new vaccine you have in the USA. My rabbits haven’t had any issues with any of the modern vaccines.

If you’re in BC I would look into it. I don’t know if RHDV is there just yet, but since it’s now established in North America it will get there eventually. It’s also possible for them to get it from feed in theory (but this is less likely).

I got mine vaccinated 2 years ago and am trying to schedule their booster. I moved states and it’s not available in my new state yet. 🙁
