Hello all. So I have 2 buns who live indoors. Their main home is a large walk in closet, plenty of room for them without a doubt. It is well ventilated and cleaned daily. Just over a week ago I noticed a spot and small bump on my buck’s from leg near the shoulder. It started out as a little black ring as shown in the photo. I called the vet but they are unable to get me in until the 31st of this month and asked me to email them a picture of the spot which could help them determine if my bun (Blackberry) could wait until the appointment or if he needed attention sooner. I never received a response and assumed that meant I could wait. Over the last week the spot has gotten bigger and is now raw skin, the bump under it has gotten a bit bigger too. I am worried about my poor Berry! Does this look like ringworm or anything else that you all have come across in your rabbits? I will call the vet back when they open tomorrow and ask further advice but wanted some fellow bun owners to weigh in on whether this seems like it needs immediate, emergency vet attention. Thanks all!

Ringworm can be flaky and scabby as a result of the flakes, but a growing bump is not something I associate with ringworm. Ringworm travels and widens, while this appears to be something festering, which makes me think of some sort of puncture wound that may have now developed into an abscess. Having a vet see it ASAP is definitely a good idea and I would mention that the wound is getting worse. No, I would not recommend waiting until the 31st — if it is an infected wound, you don’t want the infection growing.

I moved this to the Q&A section so more people will see it.

I agree with Wick, this doesn’t really look like ringworm. At least not in these pictures.

It looks more like what is known as a hot spot in dogs, i e pyoderma. Pyoderma means there’s a bacterial infection of the skin. It can start as a small wound. It should be cleaned and the surrounding fur should be shaved so the affected area can be kept clean and dry. I dont think you should wait until the 31st, hot spots can grow ( in circumference) very quickly.
