Hi everyone. I am wondering if it is possible for a rabbit to catch mononucleosis from a person? Has anybody here ever had mononucleosis and been around their rabbit? Thank you in advance!

I have only heard of it happening in experiments where they artificially suppressed the rabbits’ immune system.

Okay thank you! So if a rabbit owner has mononucleosis, it is probably okay for them to care for their rabbit normally as long as they wash their hands?

They had to suppress the rabbits’ immune systems in order for it to work. This suggests that a naturally occurring infection, if it is even possible, is extremely rare in rabbits with normal immune systems. However, if you are ill, it is never a bad idea to wash your hands before interacting with your rabbit.

No experience to report and will be interested if anyone will be able to chime in with any.

Separately, I notice that you have been wonderfully active in posting questions to our BinkyBunny community, which we love! That being said, I observe that the questions are pretty specific and likely do not fall in the realm of “typical” considerations for rabbits and their owners. I recommend being in contact with a good rabbit-experienced exotic vet to triage your questions instead, as they will have the proper medical knowledge to better inform educated guesses, if no direct experience/cases have been reported. Additionally, any specific human conditions and thoughts about their transmission may be better asked to a human medical professional as well.

You can find lists of vets here: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Choosing_a_rabbit_veterinarian#Rabbit_veterinarian_listings
.. though also looking at veterinarians listed on local rabbit rescue websites is also a great resource too.

Wick has a good suggestion. A vet would be able to answer these types of questions much better than we can. We can only make educated guesses based on the information available to us. A vet may be guessing too, but they have a much more extensive knowledge base to rely on.
